I've never been checked while hunting . While I'm fishing or lobstering i get stopped several times a year . Most are OK but some are on a power trip

I think that some of them get a bit hardened in the attitude department because of having to deal with a lot of armed people during gun season.

It would probably make a person be very cautious and stern after a while.

My experiences have been good though.

Years ago, had a warden stop to check our camp. After everything checked out, we talked him into cuffing my Dad and took a picture while he did it. He was pretty cool.

I know a couple of the local CO's. And not because of anyting I did wrong:D. I know one of them through the Turkey clinic's we put on for the local NWTF chapter! The other I call from time to time about different things...He also hunts some land not far away from where I hunt. I know if I ever have any issues I can call on either of these guys to help me out !

Get to know your CO's Thier great guys.........Just like most of the rest of us;):D

The only time I've been checked was during dove season and we were hunting across the road from my house. A couple of us didn't have our lisence because we had left our wallets in the pickup at my house. He followed us over there to check the lisence, and then I didn't think he was ever going to leave, that guy loves to talk.

I'd be nervous of them--not that I'd be doing anything wrong of course. I get nervous around cops too. It seems like whenever you don't think you're doing anything wrong they find something objectionable. I know of many that are nice however and my dad is good friends with one.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night

I've actually been approached twice this year. A middle aged warden when my son and I were loading his deer on my truck. This warden was super nice, you could tell he was checking everything out as he talked. He asked several times if we had any questions, because Wisconsin has lots of rule changes etc with the CWD areas.
The second time a young warden watched from the parking lot of a public hunting grounds as I walked back via some fields and then he drove back on a service road past me. He stopped and said "you got here real early this morning" I don't know how he knew that, but I did. I like to get set up in my climber a good half hour before light. He didn't pursue the question any longer once I said yes I did, it takes a while to get in and set up the climber. And also that I had my bow in a case as I walked out, which meant I had the case as I walked in, not violating the no bow uncased 30 minutes before season law.
THEN, theres the other warden that just left for Northern Wisconsin. She was just a bitty. I only had one meeting with her and all I'd heard about her was validated. She just kept grilling me and my son like we were breaking the law. We were gun hunting in a early season and I had my muzzleloader. For my supplies I used an old hard shelled camera case that looked like a pistol case. I don't know how many times she grilled me about do you have a pistol. It was unreal. I'm glad shes gone.
The funniest story I heard about her was when she apparently seen some poachers or thought she did back in the farm fields. So she turned off her lights to race back through the fields to catch them. She ran into the farmers rake which was parked in the field.

Sorry this was so long
Dan

RE: Checked by a Warden last night

Only time we ever had a run in was the first year after my great uncle sold off his land next to ours. The new owners were day leasing at a rate of about 1 hunter per 60 acres. The pickup trucks looked like porcupines leaving their camp. 10 guys each carrying their rifles barrel up.

One of the guys shot a really nice 8 point. 24" inside spread and 10" g2s, if I remember correctly. The new owners decided to carry the carcass to town and show it off to everyone there. It was about 65 deg F outside and they never bothered to chill the meat. Next day the GW decided to pay them a visit. As it was the road to their camp split off the road to ours and the GW didnt realize it. He came by and gave us the 3rd degree. Nothing wrong. My dad told him the group he was looking for was down the hill. He made his apologies and went down the hill to grill them. He came back the next day just to say hi(and to have an excuse to spy on the neighbors)... Said he issued something like 15+ citations.

Haven't seen the GW's around since, even though we've reported them for spotlighting deer. (I've watched them from our property) GW just say's "They called and told me they'd be hog hunting sooo...." We can't get them to investigate.
