Checked by a Warden last night
When I got out of the woods last night there was a warden waiting by my truck. He wanted to check my liscense and permits. While he was checking them he kept repeating my name. He asked me, "do I know you? Have I checked you before?" I replied, "well, I'm kind of a famous Buck hunter, maybe you've heard of me. I'm on the internet." He gave me a real strange look and I started laughing. Then I asked him, "what do you think?" He laughed and gave my liscense back then offered me a piece of his venison jerky. He was a good guy once the ice was broken.[:-]

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Sounds like you hit it lucky. Some of the local Barney Fife's are quite power mad and seem to enjoy harassing hunters.
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Most of them are real good guys around here if your friendly. When I lived in York, PA we used to fish the susquehanna at night for catfish and they would always come to check us at some point in the night and usually they would hang out for a while and shoot the breeze with us and watch us drink beers and catch fish. Most of the time, they are full of great information on good spots to go as well and are usually willing to share info if your friendly. I actually like bumping into them and am yet to find one that wasn't friendly.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
The last time I got checked I got a ticket for "attempting to take a deer with a rifle during special bow season."
What happened was I had got a doe a few days before with my bow and by the time I found it some yotes had it tore to pieces. So I was waging war on the yotes. This guy was just dead set that I had shot a deer with a rifle. Even though he found no deer, heard no shot, and when he saw me I had my 30-30 with fixed 4x scope, in blue jeans, standing in a field, with a coyote call in my pocket! So we go to court and he came over and talked to me a while and realized I was telling him the truth. He asked the judge to drop it and he got my rifle back for me. Since then we have actually taught some Hunter's Ed classes together. |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Our local game wardens are usually pretty good, it's the county cops that are on a power trip. I got checked while hunting a few years ago, and now everytime I see the same guy he just waves and goes on.
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Havn't seen one while hunting ever. 30 years Been checked fishing but never hunting.
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
My local GW is a she!! Not just a she, but a very attractive she!! C.O. Heidi Murphy is a pleasure to talk with, is very knowledgeable and very friendly. She could ask to check my license every day and I wouldn't have a problem with it. It's nice when you can have a conversation with a warden and they make you feel like they are on your side as a hunter/fisherman/trapper as opposed to looking for any reason at all to give you a citation.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Only time i ever get checked around here is during opening weekend of dove season. I never get to really talk with them though cause I hunt in one of the prime areas of the state and they run around all day checking people. Then i never see them for the rest of the season.
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I got checked 3 times in the same year by the same warden, all on different property. He was always nice, seemed like a cool guy.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Thats because shooting Doves without the proper permits would be a federal crime since they are migratory. Thats big money in fines.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I have been checked this year as well and I always thank them for checking me. I figure they are doing thier jobs and I want them to. I hope they check the guys that can't produce a license so they can be gotten out of the woods. I have gotten to know a couple of the guys for my area by calling them out of courtesy when I am planning a night time hog hunt. They will often stop by to make sure the gunshots are indeed directed at hogs. They have told me of ranches that need help with hog population control and helped me gain access. So far only for hog hunting but I'm working on deer access. I figure if I help enough of these ranchers out one will help me out. So it is always a good thing to try to get on the good side of your local Warden!

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I Have never been checked but was talking to the guys that hunt the timber to the south of me and on Sat nov 18th 2nd day of IL shotgun season they were check he walked up to them while they were on the stand had them get out of the stand to check thier license and permits. On one hand i am glad they are checking but I also would not be very happy about them coming to my stand and ruining my hunting. I just do not understand why he did not wait by the truck for them to come out.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
One of my buddies was checked and ticketed this year during a duck hunt. He told me that he and his family have hunted this small pond/lake for 15 years. Anyway he's been hunting it for the last 3 years I think and has seen other duck hunters during that time.
Here is how it went. When they got back to the landing after hunting a couple of game wardens stoped them and said that they were hunting in a state game preserve and that it is illeagal to hunt ducks in this area. My buddie showed them a map of the area that showed other state game preserves but didn't show this are on the map as a game preserve. There also were no signs in the area around the landing or next to the lake along the road that said 'game preserve'. This was their argument that there was nothing notifying them that it was a game preserve and there were no signs plus the map didn't say it was. The warden's claimed everytime they put a sign up stating that it was a preserve that someone would take it out of the ground. Well they ended up fining them all $500 each 4 guys. They were going to take all of there trucks and guns and even the dogs and boats that were being used. Then decided last min not to take any of it and just issue the fine. Then right before they left the warden's told them if they decided to fight the charge in court that they would take all of the previously mentioned things (Trucks, guns, dogs, boats). I thought this was a bunch of B.S!. They ended up finding out it was a game preserve but how were they supposed to know. No sighns and the stated map never showed it as one. What would you guys have done in this situation. |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Every one that have come across in the UP of Mi has been a total prick. I have no respect for them because show no respect to the hunters. They are under the assumption that if you are in the woods, you are doing something wrong, and they are going to find it. The jackass that checked me last friday accused me 10 times of shooting my deer at night because the eyes were far too cloudy to only have been shot 2 hours before, at 9 a.m. I am apparently not in tune with the clouding time on deer eyes after they die, but the steam billowing out of the chest was also unacceptable because "You could have easily shot it last night and left the guts in, and it would still steam like that." Complete jerk and they make the law-abiding hunter paranoid. A MI conservation officer is also not going to give any useful information, because god forbid the sportsman has a good day afield. Sorry if you guys don't agree, but this is my own personal experience and I know that many of yours are different.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Was checked in PA one Sunday, no hunting on Sunday and we weren't just driving the back roads to different spots to hang stands and scout. We were pulled over the side, the three of us taking a pee. Warden truck pulls up, stays back about 30 yards. We all finish, they pull up and get out. Two women!! [8D] they said they decided to let us "finish" before approaching.
got a good laugh, they looked in the van, no weapons and off we went. |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Most wardens around here are awesome people with good reliable information, but one of em is on a definate power trip and cant seem to have enough authority if you know what i mean.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
We had aMd GW on here till some people drove him away. He was a very respectable, likeable and down to earth guy. He went by the name #1Gamewarden and attended our NE Get-Togethers. He is a friend of mine now and always has been a friend of DaveH. When he would post some on here at the time would try to argue with him and he said he just didn't need that and hasn't been back. He was truely one of the good ones and would help you out any way he could.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Ite 622, I don't know where you're at in TX, but that's the way it is around me too. It's about a 50/50 split between friendly and cocky wardens. Of course I know that all the "poachers" in E. TX have left a nasty taste in the mouths of wardens over the years, especially when it comes to deer. It's been a while since I've been checked so I figure it'll be any day now. I'm actually looking forward to meeting the warden that patrols the area of my new lease. I want to find out what type of fella he is. Officer Shoemaker (sp?) was a friendly warden that patrolled around my last lease, it was always a nice visit when he came around. He even helped a friend of mine track one of his deer and helped drag it out of the woods.
However, I've have run into a couple that are very determined to find something you are doing wrong. |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I agree with the rest. A vast majority of GW's are great people, and don't abuse their power. I just wish there were more of them around here. I've only been checked, one time in my whole life. And I even hunt public lands every year.....
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I got checked once when I was bowfishing. Turned out he was curious and wanted to know more about bowfishing since he's seeing more people doing it in his area.
Great guy. We chatted a while, I gave him some tips on equipment and technique, and he gave me some contact names for getting new waters open to bowfishing and his personal cell phone #. Not bad. I think they're usually good folks unless you give them reason to think they should act different. -Bulz |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
You know the old saying that ignorance of the law is no excuse, sounds like those guys needed to check out their huning spot a little more thoroughly. Turtleshell so if your driving on a a usual route to work and the state changed the speed limit on one of your usual roads but some dick removed the signs and the newspeed limit wan't posted anymore. You didn't know it was changed because there were no signs and you've been driving there for 15 years.......do you think you should get a ticket??? |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Most are good some are not. There is no middle for these poeple. There a 2 up in the big woods where our camp is, 1 male and 1 female. Bothe real Ignorant A-holes! Last year the female checked me 3 times in 1 day! Uncased my bow, I asked her do you really think its loaded? She didnt like that. I know a bunch of them considering my little sister is a CO.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I had one check me out one night; he was never seen again. They will find him when they find Jimmy Hoffa.;)
Actually never been checked except when duck hunting on public marshes; easy for them to check lots of guys that way. |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I was driving home during gun season last year when i came across adoe in the road that had just been hit by a car but it also had a wound from gunshot. i pulled off and dragged the deer to the side of the road. just when i was getting back in my truck i saw the red and blues flash. the game warden searched my truck and found my unloaded 12 gauge in a locked case in the trunk with my ammo in my day pack in the back seat of the car. he was dead set that i poached the deer and took me to jail. $2000.00 for attorney fees and 3 months dealing with the courts i got it dropped and got all my stuff back. They took my car, remington 11-87 premier/scope and about $600 worth of different equipment i had. I know that not all game wardens are like that but if i can go the rest of my life without seeing another one my feelings wouldnt be hurt.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
The ones I've run into are mainly are really helpful. We normally call and tell them if we are hog hunting at night though now he told us to not worry about it because he knows we hog hunt a lot at night. The only one I've ever had trouble with is one that was determined to give us a ticket for our boat. He searched for almost a hour to find something to write us up on. The lake I normally take my boat their is a lady game warden and she checks me everytime I'm out there though she never really hassles me. It is mainly because I'm running a jet boat and she tries to catch me racing. She almost did one day but someone warned us she was waiting around the corner so we parked our boat and walked back around to where we were camped. She told me one day I'm going to catch you, and I told her she had to catch me first. She just laughs and tells me to make sure I don't drink any beer while driving it. I told her that is the number one rule no beer on the boat it is too easy to kill someone with my boat. We were even caught one day doing 75 under a bridge and the game warden just wrote us a warning ticket because we told him the truth and told him exactly how fast we were going. We even chowed him the GPS.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I've never been checked while hunting . While I'm fishing or lobstering i get stopped several times a year . Most are OK but some are on a power trip
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
GregH..cute tale..as long as your paper work is in order...let them come...if not......................................skedaddle !
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I think that some of them get a bit hardened in the attitude department because of having to deal with a lot of armed people during gun season.
It would probably make a person be very cautious and stern after a while. My experiences have been good though. |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Years ago, had a warden stop to check our camp. After everything checked out, we talked him into cuffing my Dad and took a picture while he did it. He was pretty cool.
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I know a couple of the local CO's. And not because of anyting I did wrong:D. I know one of them through the Turkey clinic's we put on for the local NWTF chapter! The other I call from time to time about different things...He also hunts some land not far away from where I hunt. I know if I ever have any issues I can call on either of these guys to help me out !
Get to know your CO's Thier great guys.........Just like most of the rest of us;):D |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
The only time I've been checked was during dove season and we were hunting across the road from my house. A couple of us didn't have our lisence because we had left our wallets in the pickup at my house. He followed us over there to check the lisence, and then I didn't think he was ever going to leave, that guy loves to talk.
|
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I'd be nervous of them--not that I'd be doing anything wrong of course. I get nervous around cops too. It seems like whenever you don't think you're doing anything wrong they find something objectionable. I know of many that are nice however and my dad is good friends with one.

RE: Checked by a Warden last night
I've actually been approached twice this year. A middle aged warden when my son and I were loading his deer on my truck. This warden was super nice, you could tell he was checking everything out as he talked. He asked several times if we had any questions, because Wisconsin has lots of rule changes etc with the CWD areas.
The second time a young warden watched from the parking lot of a public hunting grounds as I walked back via some fields and then he drove back on a service road past me. He stopped and said "you got here real early this morning" I don't know how he knew that, but I did. I like to get set up in my climber a good half hour before light. He didn't pursue the question any longer once I said yes I did, it takes a while to get in and set up the climber. And also that I had my bow in a case as I walked out, which meant I had the case as I walked in, not violating the no bow uncased 30 minutes before season law. THEN, theres the other warden that just left for Northern Wisconsin. She was just a bitty. I only had one meeting with her and all I'd heard about her was validated. She just kept grilling me and my son like we were breaking the law. We were gun hunting in a early season and I had my muzzleloader. For my supplies I used an old hard shelled camera case that looked like a pistol case. I don't know how many times she grilled me about do you have a pistol. It was unreal. I'm glad shes gone. The funniest story I heard about her was when she apparently seen some poachers or thought she did back in the farm fields. So she turned off her lights to race back through the fields to catch them. She ran into the farmers rake which was parked in the field. Sorry this was so long Dan |
RE: Checked by a Warden last night
Only time we ever had a run in was the first year after my great uncle sold off his land next to ours. The new owners were day leasing at a rate of about 1 hunter per 60 acres. The pickup trucks looked like porcupines leaving their camp. 10 guys each carrying their rifles barrel up.
One of the guys shot a really nice 8 point. 24" inside spread and 10" g2s, if I remember correctly. The new owners decided to carry the carcass to town and show it off to everyone there. It was about 65 deg F outside and they never bothered to chill the meat. Next day the GW decided to pay them a visit. As it was the road to their camp split off the road to ours and the GW didnt realize it. He came by and gave us the 3rd degree. Nothing wrong. My dad told him the group he was looking for was down the hill. He made his apologies and went down the hill to grill them. He came back the next day just to say hi(and to have an excuse to spy on the neighbors)... Said he issued something like 15+ citations. Haven't seen the GW's around since, even though we've reported them for spotlighting deer. (I've watched them from our property) GW just say's "They called and told me they'd be hog hunting sooo...." We can't get them to investigate. |
