...three years too early!
My buddy asked me to hunt with him today and I decided to hunt another spot. Big mistake!
He shot a dandy buck this morning. Around here it's extremely rare to see a deer over 2.5 years old, so when you see something like this, it catches you off guard.
It's gross after a quick measurement is 153.5". For this area, that's probably about average for a mature buck. Turns out, this deer is only 2.5 years old! After checking the teeth, taking eye to tip of nose measurement (7.25"
and weighing him (125 lb), he fit's the bill for a two and a half year old. I figure in three years he'd have made it to over 200".
I'm hoping it bred a lot of does before my buddy shot it.

What part of the state was that?? New York State Game & Fish magazine has predicted that the states biggest deer would be taken around the fingerlakes region. Wish they would migrate up here to my area!
What a great deer!

I, too, would like to know what part of the state that's from. Boy, what a beautiful buck!! Congratulations to your buddy. I am in NY too, in Westchester County, and I have been in the woods for the past 5 years with my husband(4 video taping, this year hunting), but the biggest deer I ever saw was a nice 6 point. He has the antlers to a nice 7 point, but I'm just thinking that I would love to know where all the big bucks down here hide. I guess I'll put in some more wonderful, exciting years in the woods and maybe I'll get to see one. You know, even if I don't, I really don't mind. Just being in my stand in the woods is enough for me!! Once again - CONGRATS!!

It was taken in Allegany county.
Only a few miles away is where the New York State Lucky Buck was taken and the New York State record non-typical.
I've seen bigger bucks taken around here, but never a 2.5 year old one this size.

Straightarrow, congrats to your buddy. 2.5 years old or not that's a beauty. Better that he's on your friend's wall then rapped around the bumper of a Volvo.

Huntingbry, no Volvos around here, mostly just pickup trucks.
It will certainly look better on his wall then a gun hunter's wall. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
Speaking of hitting deer. Two days ago, another friend of mine hit a nice 10 point with his pickup while on his way to his hunting spot. He was almost there when the deer jumped in front of him. He was real down about it. Although he always wanted a nice 10 point, he was hoping to do it with his bow.
