BOOM, head shot?
i saw someone who shot this really nice buck in the head, he said he shot and it died instantly, its whole entire face was compltely messed up,
i was just wondering, why dont people take this shot more often,? i can understand if your going to mount the head, but a head shot seems like an insant any painless death? |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Cuz it dosent always work!!!
My uncle shot a doe 2 years ago in the head (right between the eyes) with a crossbow and it just fell down and sat there wobbleing its head. Long story short ended up having to use a second arrow. |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Well this is my stance on it... YOU"D HAVE TO BE AN IDIOT to take that shot. Too easy for the deer to move it's head. I've seen it done, when I was younger, but if the deer move it's head just a little it's going to hit the jaw, or the lower neck or the nose. The head moves way too much to shoot there. Again this is just my opinion
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Why in the hell would anyone do that. Instantaneous death comes from a shot to the brain which is the size of a tangerine covered in thick bone. If someone takes a head shot on purpose,he needshis examined, causehe ain't right.
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
I would take that shot......but only with a .50 BMG. Pretty much won't matter where you hit it, the head will be gone.
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
1 word. UNETHICAL!
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
I'm assuming this thread was refering to gun hunting or at least I hope it is and it doesn't belong in a bowhunting forum because like was said above the head is a horrible idea with a bow, bad with a gun. What happens when the shot is off it's mark a couple inches and does nothing more than remove the bottom jaw. Death is certain but it's a horrible one. The heart/lung area is the only area someone should be aiming for regardless of weapon.
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Since we are in a bow hunting forum, I'm assuming we're talking about shooting a deer in the head with an arrow. If so, I'd say that is a very bad idea.
However, I have shot two deer in the head, killing them instantly with my 30.06. |

RE: BOOM, head shot?
I saw a doe mule deer that was shot in the head with an arrow. She was killed by a follow on shot. The death was anything but immediate. Terrible idea to take that shot. I would not hunt with anyone who would take that shot.
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
It really is not a good shot to take. The brain is a weird thing. You can lose half of it and still function fine or you can lose the smallest part of it and now you're a vegetable. If you shoot a deer through the boiler room and get heart and lung then you're probably better off.
I watched my buddy shoot a deer in the head at 50-75 yards 3 years ago with a muzzleloader. He had knocked his scope off kilt and got EXTREMELY lucky. Deer dropped like a ton of bricks. Definately not the shot to take. Like was said earlier, it moves too much. If you can take a shot at an 8 inch target that isn't moving much or a 1 inch target moving all over the place which one would you rather take? |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
people wonder why hunters have a bad name, come on people. THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What if you just slightly missed and took the deer's jaw off, with an arrow hanging in whats left of the deer's face. Then this deer struggles into some non-hunters backyard. Then they call the local TV station, get my drift. DON'T EVER SHOOT a deer in the head, EVER!!!! |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
I prefer to shot their balls off first. It seems to get them a little mad.
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
This is a good reason why to not take that shot... Notice the square hole... looks about the size of a 4 blade broadhead that made it about halfway in... imagine the blood trail, probably non existant, and this buck went to waste.

RE: BOOM, head shot?
I thought that a head shot would work great one time. When I was younger I had a doe stick her head out from behind a tree as I was still hunting my way through a creek bed. She caught me and thats the only shot I had at her unless she turned to run. I took the shot. Quite possibly the worst thing I have ever done. The bullet missed the brain and hit her where the jaw connects to the skull, basically ripping her jaw off. And the worst part was that it didn't kill her. Lucky I was able to shoot her again in a matter of seconds and finish the job. I wouldn't recommend this shot to anyone with any weapon. I love to hunt and love to be successful but not at the cost of what I remember from that day. Please just wait for a better shot.

At least they came on and asked rather than just coming on here and posting about how they can't believe the one they shot in the head got away.[&:][:@]
At least they asked. |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
I consider the head shot the easiest shot in the world to take with a bow............NOT. Dude that guy is lucky that he hit the son of a gun in the head. He was probably aiming for the lungs and pulled his shot off. Hold on let me think....Do I want to shoot this deer in the head and have a 1 in 563,246 (random statistic)chance of actually connecting or do I want to shoot for the lungs which is a money shot.......Decisions Decisions.

RE: BOOM, head shot?
its legal, take the shot
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Take the shot? Why?
Let me ask you this, why would you *want* to take that shot? That's just an absurd way to hunt. We have all encountered deer that presented no shot other than the head, but hunting is a lot about patience. If that deer *never* presents itself to you in an ethical way, maybe the next one will. Sit it out and wait. Unless you have a deer charging you because you spilled doe in estrus all over your garb, like happened to my father in law, I don't see the point in taking such a shot. |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
I have not shot a deer yet...still looking for #1......and if that was the only shot I had.....I would still be looking for #1.....dumb shot....I'll get mine, but it will be the right way!!
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
jeez guys, dont be mad at me, i saw someone do it and asked if it was a good shot to take,
its better than me seeing it and doing it without asking first, now i wont take the shot of course. and yes it was with a bow, it was a 10 yard shot and the things skull was tore up, with the broadhead sticking out thing other side. |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
I wasn't being harsh with you, but there are a ton of "young" hunters here (not necessarily in age, but experience). I'd like to do MY part to make sure ethics are kept in check and the rest of us hunters don't get a bad rep for their lack of brains.
I read a new post every day, "New hunter" "help for a new hunter" etc... I would hate to see a "new" hunter think that this is the best way to, or even a reasonableoption to hunt. If I had to do it to save my life, heck yah, I'm gonna shoot, and the chance of me even hitting it would be next to nil... unless I got Monster Boy 10 charging me with ill intentions, I ain't sending a bullet or arrow anywhere CLOSE to his head. |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
No harm ment towards you. I just thought that it is rediculous to try something like that. Ive heard of people doing it also but as for myself. Ha I would rather shoot and know I got the kill as to have a deer run off looking like it could pick up HBO through the arrow sticking out of its skull.

The unwritten rules of bowhunting. I thought we, as hunters, supported other hunters as long as they hunted within the bounds of the law ? That isn't so ? |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Oh boy, well, lemme see here, I will be completely honest when I say I don't support anything that is a threat to society's view on hunters as a whole.
I don't care if it is legal to shoot them in the head, it's an ethics thing. I can't stop you, but I would hope you have more brains than that. |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Abar....booom..to the dome.....head shots dont always kill humans either..just something toponder
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
I agree that to intentionally shoot a deer in the headis not a smart move.
I can tell you first hand about a head shot. I once shot at a nine pointer probably 15-20 yards out from my treestand, his body was broadside and my arrow hit it in the head just in front of the base to the left antler. How I missed my mark so badly I don't for the life of me know, I was aiming for the chest. The two bladed head went in the skull only probably a half an inch. The buck dropped immediately and kept trying to stand but his motor skills were messed up and he could not stand, Through the process of trying to stand he moved into some brush where I couldn't get a second shot while in the tree stand. I got out quickly and walking up to it as it looked back at me and I had to finish him off. I felt so bad, I wish I could've waved a wand and told him to be on his way. If one was to intentionally take head shots the per centage of wounding the animal would probably be much greater than killing it on the spot, I would say. Dan |

Guy's lady dude is Stealthycat and many other usernames. He is going to bait you and then turn this into one of his well this site takes advertisers that he considers to be "canned hunting" operations. He would never take a head shot with a bow.
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
Come on, do you really think it's what we do that gives us a bad name or people like PETA who hate us anyway? Spike, I believe this is about shooting one with a bow. |
RE: BOOM, head shot?
If a deer is within 20 yards and I have a shotgun(slugs) I shoot it in the neck. I have never not had one drop from that. When they drop they drop dead.
|
RE: BOOM, head shot?
My buddy was telling me how the good shooters do that. So I tried and completely missed a doe at 15 yards with the smoke pole. Granted, it was walking, but if I aimed for the heart/lung area I would have had that deer just like all the others I got. No more head shots for me!

RE: BOOM, head shot?
My father in-law has shot several deer in the head..arrows and slugs. Although it has done the trick, not really something I'd care to try.
Along the same lines, my buddy got one right below the right eye a couple weekends back. Didn't mean too...just happened that way. Dropped her though. |

RE: BOOM, head shot?
Head shot ,while bowhunting ,definately out of the question ,not something to be proud of or brag about .
I think anyone who intentionally tries this shot ,deserve's to miss completely and also deserve's the criticism he get's from other forum memebr's . We all need to have some respect for the animal we're hunting and a head shot in most case's would be a wounded animal that may never heel ,or may wonder off and die elsewhere [unretrievable ]. nubo |
