Default How do you use "the can"?

I just bought "the original can" call, and I've played with it for a little bit, definitely like how it works.

My question is how do you guys use it? What is your "technique"? How often do you call? Do you use any other calls or rattle horns?

Any help would be great, I'm gonna be giving it a try this weekend; and hopefully with some positive results!!!

I would like to know as well. I went out on Sunday in a light rain and used one. I would wait 20 minutes or so and do it three times pausing about a second or so in between. Didn't see one deer. But it was in a stand that I didn't putup, on someone elses land, didn't even know the stand was there. Horrible stand placement I thought. 5 yards from the most used trail. [:@]

Nothing works everytime. I've used the can many times. It's only worked for me during the rut. ...and still not every time. I prefer to blow in the hole of the can instead of turning it over. It sounds much better and you can control the toneand loundnessof the bleat better.

Some of these guys use a few soft tending grunts with the bleat call as well...and with success. As you said..I usually use the can in 20 minute intervals. I usually don't start using the can until one hour after safe light. And...if no deer come I won't use it the next day. I've only called in 2 bucks with it. It's not a guarantee. However; two bucks is enough to make me use it at times. I would prefer to use it during the rut.

I just bought a dvd from peter Fiduccia called how to talk to deer and he explains several calls iincluding the can call, on his video he says that Do not do a full lenght slow tip of the can becuase it's a distress call, EX. lets say from start to finish you can count to 4when you do the full tip, it signifies a distress call, instead only only tip it to the count of 1 to 2 that is a hey here I am here or heyI am comming to feed with the rest of the heard. I am not tryna promote the dvd but it is deffinatly worth buying this is my secong year Bow hunting and not having anyone to teach me anyhting I have been buying every instructiuonal video I can find and this was one of the most usefull ones yet. I used the can all last year and saw nothing doing the full tip but after watching his dvd I went out last saturday and used it and called in a total of 8 deer and had a nice 6 point come in to range how ever I apparently bumped my bow somewhere going in that morning because I missed at 12 yards and after going home and shooting again I was off a foot!!!! so I resighted and am going back tommorow but that surly worked this year where as again using a full tip last year I never saw anything. also only tip 1-2X in a 20-30min period any more will alert the deer. good luck

I've got the "little can." On Sun morning I had a deer run away from my blind when I bleated. I thought they were suppose to bring them in. I'd think twice about blind calling - calling when you can't see the deer. You really don't know how they are going to react. Less is more in the calling department

I think most calls are to loud to do when the deer is close. With the can you can blow into the hole on the bottom to make it softer and shorter/longer and play with the tone. I have had much more luck calling to bucks rather than does, does tend to ignore it or go the other way.

Typically the only time the can works for me is to bring in a curious fawn, that's happened a few times but other than that, grunts work better for me.

It's basically a doe bleat that works mainly during the three phases of the rut.

Calling with a deer nearby and alert is never advised and will usually spook them unless you're using a decoy.

I have had some good success using the can as prescribed by Primos:

Three calls 20 to 45 seconds apart every 10 to 30 minutes.

As others have said, nothing works everytime.

i blow through the hole on the can as well and use short sounds.....i have heard deer calling many times in the woods....the bleat when they get lost for the herd...normally a small doe or when they gather around something to eat. Opening day in pa, I cut off a branch to get my climber into position. The 8 deer came out and started to eat the branch right below my stand.....i heard one of the does bleat2-3 timesand two buttons were grunting and playing, all right below my stand.....biggest doe got it though

Standing up for #1 and sitting down for #2... sorry I just couldn't resist.

I use it sparingly like any call. Only if I have a buck in sight that I want to kill, that is not chasing or tending and is going the wrong way. Haven't had it work yet alone, but used with a grunt call I have had some success.
