What a weekend!
#1
Well I took Friday off because I knew the weather/wind would coroporate this weekend after the front moved through. I took off mid-morning to get to my 160 acre plot of land (near Macon, MO) for a Friday evening hunt. I get out to my south stand site at about 3 PM and sit until dark. At about 6:15, a little 4 point shows up and walks 25 yards from my stand. He sits there, at the edge of the woods, looking out into the field for about 20 minutes and suprisingly doesn't wind me (he was directly down wind of me as well), good thingI'm a nazi about scent control!
So I wait until dark and head out to my car to head up to Kirksville to stay with my brother (he goes to Truman State University). Anyway on Sat morning, my brother and I get up at around 4:30 am and get out to our stands at around 6:00. I put my brother in the south stand and I head up to the north stand. Apparently 5 minutes after I leave the south stand (I had to show my brother where it was), 5 deer show upabout 25 yards from my brother! Unfortunately, it's too dark to tell buck from doe so he doesn't take the shot. Too bad, because he didn't see anymore deer that morning. Onthe northstand, I see does all morning long feeding on mast falling from oak and hickory trees that are in the area, and I manage to almost get a shot at one that gets 20 yards from my stand! So I leave at about 10:00 am to get some grub and a little shuteye so I'll be refreshed for the evening hunt.
So I head back out from Kirksville at about 3:00 PM and getup in the north standat around 4:00 PM. So at about 4:30 PM, I'm sitting there and I have all of these squirrels making a racket in the leaves getting the falling mast and then look over my left shoulder and low and behold an 8-pointer is trotting through my shooting lane about 30 yards away! I'm totally caught off guard because a) the sound of the squirrels digging through the leaves masks the buck's movement and b) I didn't think I would see any deer movement until about 5:30 or so. So I scramble to get my bow off of my bowholder but by the time I do he has walked out of my shooting lanes and begins to feed on acorns.[&:][&:] I'm not too disappointed about not getting the shot because I know he didn't wind me and he has no idea I was ever there. Anyway, it was ahell of a weekend hunt (even though I didn't get anything), and I can't wait to get back out there next weekend!!!!!
