Default Doe decoy's

Today I went and bought a Flambeau doe decoy because a good friend of mu=ine has had one for 5 season's now and has successfully taken decent buck's with it every season .Some of the stories about how the deer come in with their eye's rolled back and their lip curling are really great .So today i went and got one ,just to see what he's talking about .

What i want to know is all the trick's on using them ,how to set them up and scent proofing them and using scent on them .Any tip's would be greatfully appreciated .Some stories about using them would be excellent as well.

My father and I used a painted up McKenzie target for a decoy a few times. We both killed bucks of of it too.

Spray it down with a scent killer after you set it up. I had a buck come running up to it one time and started sniffing it. Just at the same time I released my arrow, he jumped back away from the decoy. He smelled something on it. He stood there looking back at the decoy, then at me, back at the decoy then at me. I was hunting off of the ground at 20 yds away. I managed to get another arrow from my quiver but missed the second shot. That was exciting. I learned to descent the decoy. We do put a little doe-in-heat scent on it though. The buck woudn't run because the decoy wouldn't run. He acted as if he was waiting for a reaction from the decoy. He kept looking back and forth.

It seems that does are wary of a decoy. They snort and stomp their feet at it. At least that's been my experience.

When using a doe decoy, bucks will approach from the rear. They will approach a buck decoy, head on. So set up accordingly for that broadside or quartering away shot.

I set up in a field where I observed 2 bucks chasing does the day before. I laid a doe-in-heat scent trail across the field to the decoy. That buck came running across the field to it.

The buck I got just came strutting up to it. Ears back and all bristled up. He acted like he wanted to fight. I'm not sure why he reacted like that towards the doe decoy. Anyway, he didn't get away.

Used it during the chasing phase, early November.

I saw bucks chasing does and wanted to give them a doe that wouldn't run.

We used a shot out McKenzie target. With some paint, it looked pretty good. White on belly, around tail, ears. Glossy black eyes and nose. Drilled a hole in the rear and inserted a 35mm film canister with a cotton ball soaked in doe-in-heat scent.

This was quite a few years ago.

It was heavy and akward to carry. We usually hunted from the ground, back in the weeds from the edge of a field.

If you see bucks chasing does in a field in late afternoon, get there early and set it up the next day, maybe a cottonball with some doe-in-heat.

When they come in, their full attention is on that decoy.

My father also had one of those Flambeau decoys that is a bedded deer. It folds up.

Anyway he set it up and put a few cotton balls, with scent, under it.

Had a buck run up to it and touch noses with it. As if greeting a live deer. Well the decoy lifted up and almost rolled over. He said the buck just jumped back and looked at it. It made my dad laugh, the way the buck looked puzzled.

I haven't used one for a few years but they do work if conditions are right.
