They have a plunger that depresses when you shoot it. The major difference in them is that you have to glue a small dowel pin inside the arrow for the plunger to depress. It does add weight, but only about 5 grains. They are very simple to install, and are, IMHO, more durable and dependable.

I have used them for about 4 years now! My arrows are expensive and I don't like to loose one! I shot at a Yote this past Friday and he was in some Thick stuff and would of spent hours looking for my arrow stinking up my hunting stand area! I got out of the tree on the way out and grabbed my arrow without a problem and WITHOUT stinking up the place looking for an arrow!!!! A big plus in my book!
Never had a problem with them either!!!!! The Lumenoks are a great tool for me!

Ok that explains it. They basically work just like the home made ones that I use ocassionally. I do the exact same thing. Insert a wod dowel in the shaft and use the thill bobber lights.

I thought these lumenocks were the best thing ever....but after I starte practicing more with mine, it became evident that my arrows dropped so much more with them. So I won't hunt with them. I don't want to risk missing a deer.

I haven't shot an animal with them yet, but I like them as of now.
Just a little fyi...I picked a pack of brand new luminocks off of ebay for 21 bucks pluss a few in shipping. Saved about 8 bucks when buying them.
