Do you get HIGH?

What is the highest you will go ( have hunted ) in a tree stand. Is there a minimum height you will hunt from before you consider the stand useless?

I'm talking climbing and hang on stands.... not towers.

I usually hunt at about 20-25 ft. But I will relate this story to you all. Here in Arkansas we have a mountain called Mt. Nebo. My cousins belonged to a deer club that leased land on the side of the mountain. They invited me to hunt with them one year and upon arriving at camp they immediately took me out so I could put my ol' man climber on a tree, mark it with my GPS and find my way to it in the dark the next morning. I picked out a tree on top of a ridge, marked the location, and we left. They dropped me off the next a.m., still dark, and I made my way to my climber. I got settled in and started climbing and stopped when I figured I was high enough. Imagine my suprise when the sun began to rise and I am almost in the clouds. I had, in the pitch dark, underestimated the rate at which I was climbing. I was dang near 50 feet above the ground. I had deer milling around directly under my tree. I was so high that when my cousins came to get me, I kept my mouth shut, and they thought they were in the wrong spot and left to go find me.LOL BTW. yes, it did scare the bejezzes out of me initially.

No, not really it's illegal, just kidding.:DI usually don't go past 20ft, I don't like too much angle.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

My utility rope is 20 ft long and i climb until that runs out of slack so 20 ft i guess.

But I have a couple of 15 ft ladder stands. but i really dont like being that low.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I'm usually in the 20' range. Monday night when I put a doe down, I was probably 27-30' simply because I was kinda in the open and there was no canopy to hide me.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

All my loc ons hang between 20-25 feet. When I use my climber I climb until I feel the bow come off the ground using my 25' tow rope. Of course this is if the terrain and foliage allow.

20-25 for me as well. Sometimes a little higher if necessary.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

my sticks are 20 feet and my seat is at the top of the sticks so my platform is probably 18 ft.

i have two trees in one woods cleaned in a creek bed 40 and other is 35 from the ground but 20and 25 from the bank in front and behind me

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I usually keep it between 15-20 feet. Any higher and the angle is bad for me and any lower and I don't feel I am high enough to stay out of sight and smell.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

Usually i'm in the 10 to 15' range.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

15-25 for me...depending on the tree and my surroundings.
I once used my real "comfy" climber and put it only about 3 feet off the ground so that my sweetie could sit in it while I sat on a bucket next to her and watched a grass field. We were in good cover and she enjoyed being there...as long as she was comfortable. No deer that day, but we had fun being together.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

10-15ft range for me as well. We just don't raise any trees that will allow me to get any higher.

GMMAT 09-21-2006 06:57 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I have 16 and 17' steps that attach to my trees. I then have a couple screw in steps to aid in getting onto the stand. The thing is......I NEVER worry about how high I am. I always just look for the place I can get cover from limbs beside or below the tree I'm in.

This is my second year bowhunting.......and I've yet to be busted in a tree. I've had deer hear something and go on alert. I've had 'em look right at me and continue feeding. I've had 'em all around under me. But....I've never been busted. I've seen 26 deer in 4 sittings, this year.....and 15 have been within bow range of me.

I go as high as I have to....to get cover. No higher.

I like the 15-20 range and find it works well for me. I have been as high as 25-30 and just did not like the angles I had to shoot from.

parkerchamp 09-21-2006 07:17 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I usually hunt from 25-30 feet up, depending on surrounding cover. Until the 2004 season, I had a terrible fear of heights, and would get busted all the time because I couldn't get high enough in the stand I was using. Finally traded for a different stand, and now I love it. The higher, the better.

YooperMike 09-21-2006 07:33 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I usually stay between 18' - 20' depending on the surrounding cover. I'm not too brave when it comes to heights, so I'm not up there in the clouds.

Copper31 09-21-2006 07:35 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

12 to 20 depends on the cover that is available

livbucks 09-21-2006 07:48 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

18' for my hangon.
One ladder I have is 15' and one is 20'.
The highest I ever went withmy climber was 28'.
No need to go that high in most terrain though.
Use the wind and provide some type of background cover and 10' will work fine.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

Well I've been 32 ft. up once and that was I had my stand between two ridges .
I wanted to make sure that I wasn't sented or sighted by approching deer.
On the average I'll set my stands at 24 ft. , I think thats high enough.

Same here. About 15 to 20 ft.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

Never more than 20' (I hate heights), and usually 15' or less. Like someone said, watch the wind (and thermals) and cover around you and you'll be fine!!!

nutter 09-21-2006 08:08 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

usually 20' or untill i look down and think "oh sh1t!!!" [8D]

Trembow 09-21-2006 08:11 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I've been 30 feet up and I really didn't like it.

In my climber I'll go 20' or so which I also judge by the length of my haul line.

Most of my fixed stands are between 12 and 16 feet high.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I live in west Texas, so a tall tree is hard to find. I try to get at least 15 ft for deer. Hogs, you can get by with low blinds.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I usually won't go any higher than 18 feet. That's high enough considering the dense trees that I am sitting in.

HuntinGUS 09-21-2006 09:02 AM

RE: Do you get HIGH?

Itdepends onthe terrain and my set up. I like to be at least 20' up, but sometimes the canopy does not allow me to go that high. You also have to consider the angle of your shout and make sure you compensate for the height.

RE: Do you get HIGH?

I tend to stick to the 15-20 foot range...
The tallest stand I was in was my friends "treehouse".
That stand was 45 feet off the ground...talk about a steep angle on a shot!

RE: Do you get HIGH?

20 feet good god man- I am 15 feet maximum- I have fallen once or twice and 15 feet is a far enough fall. with a stand that high you cut back on your shot angles alot

RE: Do you get HIGH?

High? Wait a minute.... Before I answer, is this 1976 or 2006? ;)(just kidding... just kidding...)

I climb to about 20 feet (22 feet in my favorite tree overlooking a big overgrown field of tickets, where I can intercept the deer, heading for cover).

RE: Do you get HIGH?

like everyone said it will depend on the situation. the orchard im planning on hunting is a hill. i will be looking at the hill and its STEEP. thats where the trees are planted. farthest shot is probably 25yds..but 20 foot high and the deer will probably be parrallel with me. situations like that ill get higher if possible. i had a buddy i video taped for one year. i betcha he went 45-50 foot high. straight up limbless cherry trees..but he climbed to the end of his pull up rope..then evvvvver so carfully kept climbing. we rock climb together so we both didnt mind..but i didnt think anyone hunted that high...but he was in a situation like my orchard. they are the only 3 climbable trees in the area...and in the lowest spot. we were 45-50foot from the base of the tree..but they sat at the bottom of a depression thats already in a valley. i didnt like it for the fact that every time the wind blew we moved ALOT lol.
