Default Tara Wildlife?

Anybody hunted there before? We've booked ahunt at Tarain January at Willow Point on the Louisiana side of the Mississippi river. Was hoping to get some feedback from somebody that has hunted there before. 13,500 acres along the Mississippi that have been bow only since the early 80's should be pretty good.

I've seen it on TV and I've read about it many times in Bowhunter magazine and I've heard nothing but good about Willow Point. I actually would love to hunt there myself someday....

I live not far from Tara and used to work with the biologist that manages Tara. They have a lot of great deer there but like a lot of things your hunt will depend on the weather. Depending what date in Jan. you go you may be able to catch the late rut. As the crow flies I hunt less than 3 miles from Tara and our club usually kills several good buck in Jan.

Good luck

Peewee - what would you classify as good weather for that area? In my area of coastal South Carolina we see our best action when the nightime temps are in the 30's 0r 40's and the daytimes are in the 50's or 60's. Also, what will an average 3.5 year old buck score for the area? I appreciate your input.
Thank you.

I also wanted to ask you one more question. What would you consider the prime weeks for hunting in that area? If we like hunting at Tara we most likely will make it an annual thing, especially considering that your region offers good hunting later than most other areas of the country.

Peter our rut will hit around the second week of December (and will run into the third week). If you go to the MDWFP website they have a breeding simulation map and its fairly accurate.

The average 3.5 just guessing will score in the 120's to 130's. We had one killed this year that netted 147. Your hunting in an excellent place and nearly all the camps around that area are on some type of management program. Most are on a 20" beam program. The area has good soil that produces the some of the largest body weight deer in MS. Early in the season most mature bucks will probablly weigh in the 220 pounds and up. I killed an 8 point that was 3.5 years old around christmas last year that weighed 235. I believe our largest weight deer last year was 276. Thats rare but we usually kill a one or two around 250 pounds.

As far as weather I would like to see it around 30 at night and lower 50's in day. If you catch a cold front and have heavy frost stay in the stand longer, more than likely the deer will start to move around 9:00 and they will hit food plots hard in the afternoon.
