Default Murphy's Law....

Last night I talked to my dad about a spot we hunt close to home here and he told me he's been seeing a lot of does up near a small patch of woods at the edge of a soybean field and he thinks it would be a good idea to sit near the woods and hope a buck comes in looking for the does. I told him it sounds like a good idea in theory, but all the deer I've seen heading towards that spot are usually going later in the morning and since I have only a limited amount of time to hunt before I come to work that I was gonna sit in my stand in a fencerow where the deer come out of a cornfield at first light.

But come this morning I decide I'm gonna sit at the edge of the small woods that overlooks the bean field thinking that just maybe I might catch a buck slipping through. Well, come 20 minutes after light I look across the bean field by my other stand I usually sit in and out come a doe and a yearling into the field. They trotted into the center of the field and kept looking behind them every few steps. Low and behold not 2 minutes later my worse fear comes true. A huge buck appears out of the cornfield, through the fencerow, 10 yards from my stand I'm not in, and into the beans after the does. They eventually ran into the woods I was watching, but probably 80 or 100 yards out from my stand. Doesn't that just figure?? But wait, it gets better!

20 minutes later I hear deer running about in the woods behind my stand so I pick up my bow and get ready. Sure enough, the doe and her yearling come bolting out of the woods on a trail that runs 20 yards from my stand, and the big buck is right on their trail! But wouldn't you know it, the minute he gets 10 feet from my shooting lane he stops, stands around for awhile, and turns back the way he came! I couldn't believe it! Twice in one morning I miss opportunities at a 140 - 150 class buck!

Ah well, it was still a good way to start off the day. Hopefully tomorrow morning things will work out in my favor.

Gotta love it! That's why it's called hunting instead of killing. I know the feeling all to well. Last Sat. afternoon I was in my stand and hadn't seen anything for an hour. Then 2 yearling does appeared about 60 yards from my stand. They headed off across the field I was hunting but too far away for a shot. Then out of the timber 175 yards from my stand comes a decent 8 point buck. I watched him for about 5 minutes while he slowly worked his way down the field straight for me. Then I noticed that he had rubbed a 5 ft. cedar tree to death right under my stand. I got excited and waited for him to come to the tree. Just when he was about 40 yards from my stand, 2 does started to come out of the timber in the same place he came from. When he saw them he took off at a dead run with his nose to the ground and ram them back into the timber. I sat there and listened to them run through that timber for 45 minutes until it was dark. I haven't seen him since either.

That's your definition of &quot;Murphy's Law&quot;???? Are you kiddin me? <img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>

Murphy's Law is when your drawing down on one of those 140-150 class animals and your rest falls off. Murphy's Law is when your rattling horns fall to the ground when that big deer is under your stand! Murphy's Law is when that monster is broadside less than 20 yards away and you are trying to find you pins in your peep only to discover they were torn off by the brush as you made your way to your favorite stand that morning! Murphy's Law is when the big boy shows up and in your excitement you step off the back of your stand and you are left dangling by your safety harness. Murphy's Law is when you are thankful you had a harness on during your fall but are unable to get back up in you stand so you have to hang there until someone can offer some help. Murphy's Law is when you have been hanging by your safety harness for a couple of hours and you have to pee so bad you can no longer hold it back. Murphy's Law is when you are hanging by your safety harness with your soiled hunting clothes on and a bigger buck than the first walks by stopping underneath you to lip curl as he inhales whatever it is that turns him on from your urine.....need I go on?

Man it sounds like you had a GREAT morning! I haven't even seen a 140-150 class buck yet this year!! Keep up the good work!

hehe....yeah, I guess you're right. It can ALWAYS get worse!

I don't get off work until after dark, but my dad is gonna go out to this spot and see if he can find this buck if he's still in the area. This morning was the third time we've seen him this year so he must like that spot.

Now I'm kicking myself for not going out earlier this week too! Sure looks like the rut is going on full swing here in IL.

I had a beautiful 8ptr come out into a power line I was hunting and was about 70yds away but heading staright for me and then some idiot screetches his brakes on the road at the top of the power line while stoping to admire this buck. That sent that buck crashing by my stand at about 50mph I just had to sit back and enjoy him go by.

Wrong stand--wrong time. I don't think I've ever had a season when this didn't happen. One of the most memorable was when a friend and I were after a GIGANTIC drop tined 13 point buck that my friend (who had already seen it several times) assured me would be the new World Record. After seeing a big one bed up the hill from my stand for several days in a row, I moved there to intercept him. The next morning he failed to show, but my friend saw the GIANT slowly walk by my previous stand sight at under 10 yards! He also saw the giant BED DOWN 7 yards away from my stand tree in a position that would've been broadside and clear. I was 100+ yards away--sound familiar?

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.

Thanks &quot;Antler Eater&quot; The work day is draggin, and I needed a good laugh. I thought those &quot;hypothetical senarios&quot; only happened to me.

As far as second guessing stand sites...I do it constantly.
