RE: Stand Height

Ive shot deer from the ground, from as low as 8 feet, to as high as 20 feet, it doesnt matter on stand height. The higher you go the more you have to compinsate for the angle, I prefer to be less than 20ft.

12-15ft. The canopy where I hunt is very low, mostly cedars and some taller oaks. With a low canopy you don't have to go as high, and would actually be detrimental.

I'm just curious......

Others have mentioned these two FACTS, also, but here goes......

1) If you're THAT high in a tree....doesn't it affect the angle of your shot? I mean....if you're objective is a double-lung shot.....how far away from your stand must the deer BE for you to have an effective angle?

2) If you can garner effective cover at a lower height......why would you go higher....simply to be "higher"?

I have friends around here that hunt.....and they, too, seem to be of the mindset that getting higher is "better". My son hears this.....and it concerns me for his safety (no. 1) and for hunting education (no. 2).

I've got a climber....and I've been to the 20'+ mark.....but it was ONLY to get to some good cover. I've picked my stand placements, this year.....based on cover (for early Fall). My ladders are 16' (to my hang-on locations).

IMO there's no need to be any higher than 15' off the ground, I've got hunting buddies that swear they have to be 25' off the ground, As long as you play the wind and practice scent control you'll be fine. It's hard to make and ethical shoot from that high.

RE: Stand Height

Max 15 feet for me. I like the deer in close and I don't like a steep angle.

RE: Stand Height

I've never been in a tree stand (just kinda scared to climb a tree at my age having never done it except when i was a kid) I always hunt from the ground.
I've been thinking of a climber for this year.

At what height would you say i begin to see the benefits of a tree stand versus my ground blind. Just wondering how high i will have to consider going.

I don't get over 12 or 16 feet, depending on the ladder stand. I have friends that go 25 and up, not for me.
