Stand Height
How high does everyone generally hang their stands? I like to be at least 17 ft up, but Im thinking about maybe 20 this year.
|
RE: Stand Height
Minimum 20 feet. I've been as high as 30.

RE: Stand Height
ORIGINAL: mobowhuntr Minimum 20 feet. I've been as high as 30. My honey hole stand is up 22 feet, 20 foot ladder sticks and two branches... When I use my climber, I climb until I feel my bow come off the ground on the end of my 25' tow rope....if the landscape, terrain and foliage allow. |
RE: Stand Height
I only go about 15 cause the place i hunt doesnt have very big trees. If i can, ill go 20.
|
RE: Stand Height
it depends on the terrain but i like it high 20-25 usually but some places 15 because of trees or I'm on a slope
|
RE: Stand Height
Usually around 25ft, sometimes I venture to 30ft. Then I run out of rope pulling my bow up or Id probably go a little higher.
|
RE: Stand Height
Depends on the stand. This year I put up two new ladder stands.. One at 20 feet and one at 22 feet..
|
RE: Stand Height
Heights is my weakness, but I try and go 20. My one ladder stand is only 16 though.
|
RE: Stand Height
Dont like heights myself, I have 5 ladder styands, and the highest one is only about 11'. I know it would be better to be higher, but I have been hunting 4 years, and have 3 bow kills to my name, so it can be done. And I have passed on many deer that had no idea that I was there. Just make sure that you have lots of back cover.;) NO point in going any higher, if you wont be able to move when you see a deer becouse you are scared crapless.[&:]
|
RE: Stand Height
What ever it takes, I have two good stands and enough climbing sticks to get a maximun of 32 ft. each.
So depending on the terrain , I like to be anywhere around 20 to 30 ft. up. |
RE: Stand Height
25'-30'
|
RE: Stand Height
I like to get as high as I can get! ;)
|
RE: Stand Height
I hunt on the mountain of north alabama, and I can go up 20' in a tree. In front of me I can be shooting down 40' while behind me I can be looking at the ground. Some places it's not soo steep but those deer sure do love the hard to reach places.

RE: Stand Height
15 20 ft

RE: Stand Height
No doubt. In 13 years of bowhunting I have over 50 kills in four different states, and almost half of them are from the ground. The gus in my family give me grief, but I kill deer every year from the ground. Like my new ladder stands as wee, but it can be done with the right setup.

RE: Stand Height
I try to get 20 to 25 ft. but the trees don't always allow it. I usually use a climber so I need a straight tree. Sometimes I have to put up a strap on and try to get at least 20 ft. or in good cover of limbs.
|
RE: Stand Height
Most of the stands I've taken deer from are no higher than 16 feet, most of them 12 to 14. But I hunt mostly flat swampy terrain with few ridgesides to contend with.
Remember: the higher you go, the smaller your chance at a double lung shot is as well as the size of your target. |
RE: Stand Height
Highest stand is 20ft lowest stand is only 12 feet and I don't spook many deer just watch the wind and do all you can to cover/eleminate sent. I also do alot of hunting from ground blinds bot comercial and thrown together setups in the woods. All work good in certain places and wouldn't work good in other places. I let the lay of the land and the wind direct the wayI set up the area.

RE: Stand Height
18 to 22 feet!
|
RE: Stand Height
The stands I set out this year are about 32 feet off the ground. I have a ladder stand set at 12 ft (as high as it would go). If I'm climbing I'll usually go up about 25 feet. 32 feet is up there. If you got a queezy stomach I don't recommend it.

RE: Stand Height
Ive shot deer from the ground, from as low as 8 feet, to as high as 20 feet, it doesnt matter on stand height. The higher you go the more you have to compinsate for the angle, I prefer to be less than 20ft.
|
RE: Stand Height
12-15ft. The canopy where I hunt is very low, mostly cedars and some taller oaks. With a low canopy you don't have to go as high, and would actually be detrimental.

RE: Stand Height
I'm just curious......
Others have mentioned these two FACTS, also, but here goes...... 1) If you're THAT high in a tree....doesn't it affect the angle of your shot? I mean....if you're objective is a double-lung shot.....how far away from your stand must the deer BE for you to have an effective angle? 2) If you can garner effective cover at a lower height......why would you go higher....simply to be "higher"? I have friends around here that hunt.....and they, too, seem to be of the mindset that getting higher is "better". My son hears this.....and it concerns me for his safety (no. 1) and for hunting education (no. 2). I've got a climber....and I've been to the 20'+ mark.....but it was ONLY to get to some good cover. I've picked my stand placements, this year.....based on cover (for early Fall). My ladders are 16' (to my hang-on locations). Jeff |
RE: Stand Height
IMO there's no need to be any higher than 15' off the ground, I've got hunting buddies that swear they have to be 25' off the ground, As long as you play the wind and practice scent control you'll be fine. It's hard to make and ethical shoot from that high.

RE: Stand Height
IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE COVER, BUT THEN AGAIN IVE BEEN IN MY CLIMBER IN A TREE THAT LOOKS LIKE A TELE. POLE NOTHIN AROUND ANDS SHOT DEER. ID SAY 0- 30FT IS FOR ME
|
RE: Stand Height
Max 15 feet for me. I like the deer in close and I don't like a steep angle.
|
RE: Stand Height
15-25 feet for me. depends on terrain.
|
RE: Stand Height
I've never been in a tree stand (just kinda scared to climb a tree at my age having never done it except when i was a kid) I always hunt from the ground.
I've been thinking of a climber for this year. At what height would you say i begin to see the benefits of a tree stand versus my ground blind. Just wondering how high i will have to consider going. |
RE: Stand Height
i usually go 22 to 26 feet
|
RE: Stand Height
I don't get over 12 or 16 feet, depending on the ladder stand. I have friends that go 25 and up, not for me.
|
RE: Stand Height
My ladder stand is 15' and when using my climber have gone as high as 30' to get where I have break up behind me. I used to only hunt from the ground but then got my first ladder stand. After seeing the advange of being up in the air compared to being on the ground I now mostly hunt out of my treestands. I still use my portable ground blind when I take my kids with me.

RE: Stand Height
It depends on the canopy and the cover. I've hunted places where I climbed 25-30 feet before I was out of plain view. Other places, I've hunted 12-16 feet up and done fine.
The question shouldn't be "how high?" It should be "How hidden do I have to be?" If you find a good tree that has 2-3 big trunks, you can position your stand inside the V, and be concealed very well. In that case, you won't need to be very high at all. You just have to pick the right time to draw your bow. Another consideration is your scent. If you're confident that you're not putting off much human odor, hunting lower is fine. If you break a sweat on your way in, you might want to hunt a little higher to disperse your scent over their heads. |
