Idiots, Idiots, Idiots
It never ceases to amaze me how many idiots think that there is nothing at all to bowhunting but to get a bow, get some arrows, walk in the woods, and then kill a deer. We've had a new Cabelas store move into the area and suddenly all kinds of idiots are taking up bowhunting and honestly it's quite scarey what these idiots are thinking! They spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on all the latest high-tech equipment and buy the most expensive camo and scent-lock type suits and then head out to the timbers to begin their wounding seige on unsuspecting deer. More and more I'm all for having to pass some type of required competency field test before someone can be permitted to bowhunt. These people are going to hurt themselves or someone else, not to mention the amount of deer they are going to wound or not find because they have no clue on how to blood trail an arrowed deer or even how to field dress a deer if they are lucky enough to actually find one. I was lucky when I started and had good friends that helped me but I made sure I had some kind of clue what the hell I was doing before I ever carried a bow into the woods. However, I would not have minded going through a "bow"hunters safety course or something prior to being able to purchase a tag. What do you all think? If you are reading this and you are an idiot...please seek help.

I myself have hunted with a bow for over 26 years. I think it would be a great idea for a bow safty class like they have a gun safty class. I beleive that you should also pass a shooting test with yourt own gear after you have completed a bow class, something like hitting a 12" circle at 20yds a certain number of times. It makes me sick when some hunters take shots they shouldn't. Head on shots, Texas heart shots, etc. Please have respect for the game your hunting and take a killing shot.

I agree Wolfen. Unfortunately, thats the way it is...pretty much everywhere. My buddy that owned a proshop for quite a while would have plenty of folks come in the day before the season started, and say they wanted to bowhunt this year, and needed a license, bow, arrows, etc...."oh and could you get it shooting close...I'm going out tomorrow" <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> That alone almost caused him to sell the shop...

Aahh... But that's what makes them an idiot. Not knowing they are one!
Funnin' aside. Good point Wolfen. I too had a "mentor" help me with my bowhunting.
I'm just starting my second year bow hunting and I still seek help & assistance. When I got my first deer, I was able to call & get some assistance field dressing. Now that I've seen the process "live", I'll have little trouble the next time.
I will say that it helps being able to seek information here as well.

I agree also. Before i really got into bowhunting i read everything i could find on bow hunting and my grandmother bought me a suscription to petersons hunting mag and the first thing i would do is go straight to the chuck adams articles.. I then got my brothers old Bear Polar LTD out of the closet and set it up and started shooting. I shot that bow so much that i was able to ROBIN HOOD arrows from 30 and 40 yards on a pretty regular bases. Then i got my blitzenburger fletching jig and my Larry Wise how to tune your bow and broadhead books and it was all history after that!!!!!!!

Where's the "Idiot's get help here" door? LoL. I didn't (don't) have anyone to show me the ropes. No one in my family hunts. I know a few people that do, but with my work schedule ( weekends are my busiest time) I can almost never make it work with their schedules. Now pheasant hunting is a group sport, but bowhunting around here anyway is almost Sacred. Most don't want the added pressure on the land of another hunter and most don't want an "apprentice".
I'm 31 years old and this is my second year deer hunting ( Mostly Bow) and I had to figure it out for myself. Luckily there are forums like this and people that have been around to guide and share tips. I agree there should be a competency test, but I'd be happy if the IDIOTS" carry a bow instead of a gun. And as for me, I'm still trying to find that "idiots get help here" sign and reading every post in this dang place!
