archery? modern firearm? huhhh what is wrong bow or riffle I guess the yuppies are calling riffles modern fire arms now? Anyn way I 100% totaly agree personaly I think we have alot of those buy a bow today wound a deer tommarow people here. A couple of days ago there was a guy who said it was almost dark too dark to see that the deer had antler's there was brush in the way and he had to stand on his tip toes to shoot over the crotch of a tree and he still had to aim high and "hope" for a high lung shot. He wound up getting lucky and spining the deer. When I questioned him and told him he made a bad decision and got luck and that what he did was unethical he said that was a "good shot and numerous people came to his defense and said I was putting my nose where it didn't belong to top it off there is even question of if the deer was leagal or not. People like this make me SICK! Even if the deer was legal he still had no buisnes taking that shot and all he was doing was "shooting and hopeing" he just happened to get lucky this time.

I welcome any idiot who just like 90% of you had to learn to hunt at some time and I hope that more of them than not figure out the importance of ethics and respect for the animal and other hunters. I think we need to cut the condemning crap out just because we have learned to shoot straight. I don't want to join in a call for legislating anything but the right to hunt. $.02 from a free man.

New York requires a bowhunting safety course but any idiot can pass I had two guys in my class that could not speak english but passed after being walked through the test. I have only been bowhunting for four years ( have to start somewhere nobody starts with 20 yrs experience ). I shoot at lest three times a week during the offseason and spend many hours reading about deer, rut periods , scrapes , rubs , navagation etc.. I also spend most of the offseason scouting any land I can get access onto. I think some people are just too lazy and have a lack of respect, passion and love for deer and the outdoors

I don't think that all newcomer's are idiots - or even that if you are not familiar with bowhunting, and start - that makes you an idiot. I will agree that there are plenty of them out there though. Someone else mentioned it, and I agree, bowhunting (not archery by the way - that's like what you take in High School Gym class)is a sport where a mentor goes A LONG WAYS. Its difficult to learn on your own the feelings you have when you cannot recover a deer, or mistakes that you could have avoided if only someone could have offered advice - like do not follow to soon.....

I also think that the majority of Bowhunters are upstanding, resposible individuals - sure there are a few bad apples, and we should not tolerate known disdain for unethical behavior. But.... when a hunter is not aware that their actions are unethical, we should try not to judge, only to educate.

Advice to all - If you know a new bowhunter, I'd encourage you to be a mentor.

I agree that there should be an education class but as for being an idiot I guess I was one myself years ago when I knew nothing about bowhunting. I figued it out myself with magazines and hunting boards. I read read and read some more then I went into the woods and got a nice buck 8 pointer and he only went 40 yeards and used a lot of tips I got from this board too. But it would be perfect if everyone had a father figure that hunted so to show you the way to do it but not everyone has that chance. I can only do my part in that if and when my wife and I have a little one that I will be able to show him or her how to do it and not have to go through what I did to get to where I am right now.

Better be careful what you wish for.A competentcy test just might have you sitting on the sidelines. The safety course is mandatory for the first time license in Maine. In my class few were rookie hunters. Most were adults that wanted to expand their hunting experience.A competency test has no bearing on how you will do as a hunter.

Oh sure, a test administered by the state. One more way for big brother to take some of your hard earned money.

We all started at some time or another and didn't know jack. To classify new hunters as idiots? What, they movin in on your turf.

Any self respecting bow shop owner would advise the new hunter to practice, practice, practice. And then of course make the sale. They are after all in business to make money, not better bowhunters.

Just my 2 cents worth.
