Who Got You In

Who got you into bow hunting? Nobody in my family bow hunts at all, or gun hunts deer except me and my kids. A friend at work talked to me alot about bow hunting and he told me that it is the most satisfieng form of hunting there is. One day I stopped at a archery shop to look around and left with a pse nova, I am hooked for life and so is my 2 oldest son and my youngest son is getting a bow this year.:)

Goose and duck hunted a property 10mins. from my home. One guy also bowhunted that property, I figured what the heck, so close to home, I decided to give it a try. Best decision I ever made!

Two years ago I was visiting a man frequently who was dying of cancer. He gave me a beat up old compound Darton bow as a gesture because he knew I hunted. Through many ideas I got on here and other hunters locally, I decided to invest my time learning to use a bow. I like it alot.PLUS....it gives me extra hunting/ scouting time in the WMA in which I hunt.

G-Dawg02, a buddy of mine who happens to be on the board once every blue moon, got a crossbow from a pawn shop back when we were in the 8th grade or so.

I scrounged around and came up with a crossbow that was my Great Uncle's before he moved on, that my Grandpa had at his house...an old PSE Foxfire.

We started shooting crossbows and eventually made the progressive switch to compounds...neither one of us has ever looked back...

Myself, 18 years ago (dang I'm getting old:() I loved to hunt and wanted to be in the woods any way possible. Bow season is one month longer than the rest of deer season in TX so that's why I started.

My dad got me into it in the early 60's, when I was 5 or 6. I still think it's the coolest thing ever, as my 18 year old son has now taken 6 bucks and 4 does. It's a family tradition.;)

I kinda did myself, with a little bit of inspiration from a book from Fred bear. Also had a roomate that, gave me a recurve when I was around 19 years old.My ex bought me a compound back then a PSE Lazer(I think it was called ).I read books on deer hunting and was self taught.I used to love stalking deer in the nearby woods and would realy get close.I didn't take a deer for my firstfifteen years of bowhunting, but man did I learn a bunch in those years(IMO)I put the bow down after about ten years, and met a friend when I moved to another town ,that re-introduced me to bowhunting and newer equipment and using release aids instead of finger shooting and such.About 6 years ago I started buying how to videos, like tuning ,fundamental shooting stuff, andd string making videos,as well as a bowpress, and string making jig, chrono and such.I now work on my own stuff, and that buddie that got me back into my passion his as well as others that he brings my way. Also this web site and another has kept the fire burning some too. way back then for some reason I fell in love with the Hoyt logo (You know the apple)I was young then but for some reason I wanted one of those bow with that red apple logo on it but couldn't afford it.It took a long time but I bought my first Hoyt back in 1999 or 2000 it was the Havoc.I now own a Razer tech and have taken many critters with both bows.Bill D>

My father took me when I was first hunting, but only because I asked him to. Otherwise he thinks bow hunters are a waste. (some very poor excuses for huntersare his only direct experience with them)

But the reason I wanted to go was I got tired of freezing my .... tail .... off every year during rifle season, and I had been shooting at a local shop for competition for a few years. So I decided to try to avoid the lousy weather of late November and Decemberand get done well before the seasons changed too much.

Now I am getting back into it because I want the longer season and greater chance at getting my deer.

Simple as that.

My roomate in college 13 years ago. One of the best all around "sportsmen" I'll ever know. Haven't looked back since, started with a Golden Eagle Evolution(still have) which I traded one of my guns in for. In college I couldn't afford anything, so I had to pawn off anything I could. One of the best trades I have ever made.

My father did back in high school, but then his health started to deteriorate and I stopped for a few years. When I met my now wife 6 years ago, her brother is a die hard bowhunter.. He got back into it tenfold and the addiction took over from there. Both are totally obsessed. Come deer season everybody says that I should have married my brother in law because we hunt so much together.

Some guys at church bow hunted for deer and it sounded like fun. They were the keystone Cops of bowhunting, so I pretty much had to learn everything via the school of hard knocks. That was nearly 30 years ago!!!

Grew up with the whole family bow hunting up at our cabin innorthern WI. Stopped when I was about 15. No place to bow hunt. Our family cabin/land was 2 hours away. Dad didn't want to drive after the friday night football games. So when I got out of college got a job andbought a butt load of land to hunt on and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Nobody in my family hunts at all. My dad got me into fishing at an early age though and I gained a great appreciation for the outdoors. When I was a kid, some of the older kids got into trouble with the law for doing stupid stuff with their bows, and one of their parents gave me their kid's stickbow. I must have been about 9 or 10. I used to tell my parents that I was going hunting, and they thought it was cute. Well, I used to go and nail cottontails, lol. Many years later I finally got into bowhunting on my own.

My dad and Papaw got me hooked when I was about 7. I shot a Fred Bear youth bow. They had a nice indoor range set up in the barn with lights and everything. Only problem is you only have about 25 yards to shoot.

When I was little, my dad used to bowhunt, and of course we all gun hunted. I used to watch him practice and help him pull arrows. In high school/college I didnt' have much time with football but now that I am done with that, I have lots of time so I am back into it hardcore now, but my dad was the instigator!

BUCK442 on this site got me into bowhunting, I had hunted deer with a rifle in MO, and he always talked about the deer he had taken with a bow. Another thing that got me into the sport was the longer season, anything to extent my time in the deer woods. Now I am addicted and count ever day till season. ~Jeff

People around here laugh at me when I say I wanted to start bow hunting because I got hooked on watching Waddell bowhunt. He looked like he was having the time of his life and he got so excited ... they laugh because my husband and his friends are avid bowhunters but I got interested because of Waddell!!! Seriously, when hubby and them were practicing and setting up it looked like all work. I was never there when they shot something so how did I know the exhiliration of hitting something that close? Whew what a misconception!!!

I did .
I got tired of sitting out the first six weeks of our deer season while others got to hunt , and the state I live in doesn't allow crossbows during the early archery season . I can't honestly say that I love it , but at least I'm out there instead of sitting at home wishing I was hunting something besides squirrels .

Both my parents got me into hunting... my dad got me into bowhunting....

First deer with a rifle at age 9.... Promptly decided to try with a bow, mainly cause I enjoyed shooting and I was physically capable of drawing a legal peak weight by the time I was 10.... My mom would sit in a box blind 100 or more yards away, while I sat in the treestand. Untill I turned 12 and could hunt without direct adult supervision. Hunted a few years untill high school, then being in band and playing sports really put a crimp on my free time... Still shot as much as I could but just never could get out there to hunt. Since I graduated in 2000, I've been more concerned with rent and groceries so I havn't been able to buy new equipment... Luckily My dad and I should be able to go this year. The bug is eatin away at me.

Never did score with a bow, hopefully that will change this year.

My dad did about 25-30 years ago. I mostly target shot and bowfished for carp and gar. I pretty much stopped when I left for college. I just bought a new bow and will bow hunt for the first time in 20 years this fall.
