Time to share another hunting experience from my neck of the woods. Yesterday was the first day of Pennsylvania's small game season. The small game season overlaps with the last two weeks of early season archery in our state. What this basically means is that small game hunters and bowhunters share the public lands for each day of those two weeks. In the area that I normally hunt this is quite a spectacle to see. I typically have anywhere from 10-20 small game hunters pass by my stand before 10 am on the first day of the season but this year the numbers were significantly down. These hunters tend to push the deer around quite a bit so it isn't unusual to see many deer at all times of the day.

Well, to make a long story short, I did manage to see 6 deer....an unidentifiable buck (that is my way of describing one that I could not count the number of points on) and five doe. I managed to be able to get a good shot at the last doe (trailing the buck) and filled my 3rd and final anterless deer tag for the season.

At the time I was using the new Hoyt Razortec that I picked up this past week coupled with some Rocket Hammerheads (3 blade model) that I had yet not used on a deer. The results were devastating! With the way I had the bow configured my setup is pushing 73 ft. of Kinetic energy and the Hammerhead is a 2 inch cutting diameter expandable. I think the results speak for themselves.....






As you can tell I had a sizable entrance and exit wound and the head's ferrule was undamaged. The blades, obviously, are bent but they are designed that way in order to bend around hard substances such as bone.

The shot was a complete pass-through and the arrow was buried in the dirt approximately 4 inches on the other side. The shot was taken at roughly 25 yards from an elevation of 20 feet. The deer was slightly quartering away at the time. The arrow passed cleanly through one lung and the made a perfect tri-cut into the heart before exiting out the "armpit".

That is more than impressive Frank! If I ever work up to increasing my draw weight I just may switch. Congrats on your doe! No luck for me just yet, but things sure are starting to get interesting in the woods.

Ahh come on you know mechanical broadheads don't penetrate...ahhh it takes 45 pounds of energy just to get through the hide...but see those blades bent...and uh..Seriously I've had similar results with the hammerhead and the miniblaster.Only bad thing I can say about em is changing the blades is a major PITA.Why don't they put an allen head screw in there?If I can find some that small I might try that.Congratulations.

One set of blades is a small price to pay per deer for performance like that. I guess one of the pictures was the entrance hole (top) and the other the exit hole?
I like the looks of the strictnine with the pathfinder tip along with it's 2&quot; cut.
But for now my 60 ft/lbs of K/E will stick with the sidewinders. Gotta love those Rockets!!

I used to not be a big fan of those large heads, but after actually testing them myself( thanks to Frank) and seeing actual field results with properly tuned bows with enough KE to see them work, I am coming around. Nice job on the Doe, sounds like your freezer is packed.

You should really try one of these new Cam and a Half bows. In my limited experience with them so far they appear to be able to generate more energy than the previous year's Command Cams, Versa and Excel cams at the same draw weight and draw length...plus they are just silly accurate. I can just hear the Havoctec Cam and a Half calling your name....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Yes, I would agree that changing blades could probably be made somewhat easier....but I really haven't had that much of a problem using a very small screw driver. Maybe that is the next step in Rocket's development.

Yes, you guessed correctly. The first shot was the entrance wound on the side of the deer and the second shot was the exit wound beneath the front legs of the deer. I, too, like the looks of the Strictnine but I won't be using them unless they can get the head weight down to 100 grains from the 125 that they currently are.

Yes, the 3 blade model works just as well as the 4 bladers that I was using earlier in the season. My freezer is now officially full. If I am lucky enough to take a buck yet this year then I will have to start giving away some meat. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

If a guys got the juice, I don't know of a head that delivers more tissue damage (and penetration for its size) than the hammerhead!
