Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Time to share another hunting experience from my neck of the woods. Yesterday was the first day of Pennsylvania's small game season. The small game season overlaps with the last two weeks of early season archery in our state. What this basically means is that small game hunters and bowhunters share the public lands for each day of those two weeks. In the area that I normally hunt this is quite a spectacle to see. I typically have anywhere from 10-20 small game hunters pass by my stand before 10 am on the first day of the season but this year the numbers were significantly down. These hunters tend to push the deer around quite a bit so it isn't unusual to see many deer at all times of the day.
Well, to make a long story short, I did manage to see 6 deer....an unidentifiable buck (that is my way of describing one that I could not count the number of points on) and five doe. I managed to be able to get a good shot at the last doe (trailing the buck) and filled my 3rd and final anterless deer tag for the season. At the time I was using the new Hoyt Razortec that I picked up this past week coupled with some Rocket Hammerheads (3 blade model) that I had yet not used on a deer. The results were devastating! With the way I had the bow configured my setup is pushing 73 ft. of Kinetic energy and the Hammerhead is a 2 inch cutting diameter expandable. I think the results speak for themselves..... As you can tell I had a sizable entrance and exit wound and the head's ferrule was undamaged. The blades, obviously, are bent but they are designed that way in order to bend around hard substances such as bone. The shot was a complete pass-through and the arrow was buried in the dirt approximately 4 inches on the other side. The shot was taken at roughly 25 yards from an elevation of 20 feet. The deer was slightly quartering away at the time. The arrow passed cleanly through one lung and the made a perfect tri-cut into the heart before exiting out the "armpit". I just thought I would share some of my good fortune with you folks. :) I hope to do a full "review" of the Razortec some time today for the technical and equipment review forums. <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle> Thanks ahead of time for the posts. RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
That is more than impressive Frank! If I ever work up to increasing my draw weight I just may switch. Congrats on your doe! No luck for me just yet, but things sure are starting to get interesting in the woods.

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Ahh come on you know mechanical broadheads don't penetrate...ahhh it takes 45 pounds of energy just to get through the hide...but see those blades bent...and uh..Seriously I've had similar results with the hammerhead and the miniblaster.Only bad thing I can say about em is changing the blades is a major PITA.Why don't they put an allen head screw in there? If I can find some that small I might try that.Congratulations.

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
One set of blades is a small price to pay per deer for performance like that. I guess one of the pictures was the entrance hole (top) and the other the exit hole?
I like the looks of the strictnine with the pathfinder tip along with it's 2" cut. But for now my 60 ft/lbs of K/E will stick with the sidewinders. Gotta love those Rockets!! |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
I used to not be a big fan of those large heads, but after actually testing them myself( thanks to Frank) and seeing actual field results with properly tuned bows with enough KE to see them work, I am coming around. Nice job on the Doe, sounds like your freezer is packed.

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Nice shot, Frank!
Glad to see your new "toy" is paying dividends.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> My Muzzys are eagerly awaiting an encounter with a buck. (I only got one doe tag) Avoid the inevitable until it is absolutely unavoidable! |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Thanks folks for the comments. :)
Tribal, You should really try one of these new Cam and a Half bows. In my limited experience with them so far they appear to be able to generate more energy than the previous year's Command Cams, Versa and Excel cams at the same draw weight and draw length...plus they are just silly accurate. I can just hear the Havoctec Cam and a Half calling your name....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Cajun, Yes, I would agree that changing blades could probably be made somewhat easier....but I really haven't had that much of a problem using a very small screw driver. Maybe that is the next step in Rocket's development. Dave, Yes, you guessed correctly. The first shot was the entrance wound on the side of the deer and the second shot was the exit wound beneath the front legs of the deer. I, too, like the looks of the Strictnine but I won't be using them unless they can get the head weight down to 100 grains from the 125 that they currently are. 5shot, Yes, the 3 blade model works just as well as the 4 bladers that I was using earlier in the season. My freezer is now officially full. If I am lucky enough to take a buck yet this year then I will have to start giving away some meat. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> Jeff, Yep, the new "toy" is definitely paying off. It is an absolute dream to shoot. I am eager to put my thoughts onto paper. I just need a little inspiration...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Good luck to you on that new piece of land. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
There is no way I can trade in my HavocTec! I haven't shot anything with it yet! <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> Oh I wish we could hunt on Sunday!!

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Lord those make a big hole. Hell that's a bigger hole than my groups. Did it drop right there?

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Nice Holes!!! :)
If a guys got the juice, I don't know of a head that delivers more tissue damage (and penetration for its size) than the hammerhead! |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Buckfevr,
Actually, it ran about 40 yards up hill before expiring and then rolled back down hill. :) AE, Yes, I definitely agree about the damage that these heads can do. This is twice now that I have seen the Hammerheads at their "best". |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
I have a question, I shoot a Mathews MQ1 at 60 Pounds, 30-inch draw length, and Gold Tip Carbon arrows, I was wondering if my setup generates enough KE for hammerheads, or if I should stick to the steelheads(smaller cutting diameter) or fixed-blade broadheads. I would like to shoot the hammerheads because of the huge blood-trail they generate, and the accuracy. Thanks in advance guys.

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
OMH,
It would be much easier to make a recommendation if we had slightly more info. The speed of your current setup being very important as well as rough idea as to your arrow weight. With these two figures you can determine your Kinetic Energy and then a recommendation becomes much easier. Some of the info in question can be found at www.bowjackson.com. He has arrow weight charts and a KE calculator. If you want a wild guess then I would probably say you are borderline for Hammerhead usage. The reason being your draw weight. Generally speaking, a 10 lb reduction in draw weight equates to roughly 18 fps in arrow speed. 18 fps can have a huge impact on a person's KE numbers and high KE numbers are definitely needed with a large cutting diameter head like the Hammerhead. But then again you probably have plenty of KE for the Steelheads considering the more compact overall design and smaller cutting diameter. One suggestion...you might want to try the Sidewinders before moving "up" to the Hammerheads. The Sidewinders have a 1.5 inch cutting diameter but more of the overall shape of the Hammerheads. A good compromise of characteristics between the two heads you mentioned. Hope this helps. |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Hey PaBowhntr congratulations on that doe. Thanks alot for the hammerhead pics. Let me tell ya I been shooting these heads for quite some time and wont change them for the world. I have had absolutely great performance with them and as you can see they cause a lot of damage. To me the bigger the cutting diameter the better the damage factor on deer. The hammerheads are devastating with their impressive two inch cutting diameter. I have had a 100% succsess rate with them.

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Now Frank, tell us the truth... You made those holes by driving your kia through her, didn't ya... Fess up now, we're on to you :)
I'll be flinging the rocket wolverine 3p this weekend, I hope I get as good a result :) |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Congrats Frank, are you sure you didn't pull that FX out of your closet for this one?<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
Good job on breaking that new bow...I mean breaking in....SORRY<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle> Gotta jab ya when I can!! Anyway, congrats on your 3rd one. I am still trying to work on my first here at home!! ![]() My Web Page www.geocities.com/hfpmad |
RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Frank, congrats on the doe. Those heads are devastating. The Razortec is batting 1000!

RE: Razortec, Small Game Season, Hammerheads
Thanks guys. I appreciate the comments...no matter how twisted some of them can be....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>.....
...he comes out swingin' with a right hook....<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> No, it wasn't my Kia that did the damage nor an FX...:)...but, as always, I will be eager to see what Mathews comes out with for this year. The Razortec is batting 1000...1 for 1...<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>...and those Hammerheads are now two for two. Just wait till I get the 31 inch draw length model....:) |
