Default Will he die??????

I shot a buck last night, at about 19 yards, the arrow went in about 1 inch..right in the kill zone. It turns out my mechanical broadheads failed and only one blade oopened. We looked for about 4 hours with no blood. Does anyone think he will die, It was a perfect shot other than the arrow only penetrating an inch.

THanks

That all depends weather you managed to puncture a lung or not,it's hard to say.The bigger question is why did the arrow only penetrate an inch? Even if the blades did not open it should have penetrated more unless your set up is way too low on KE for a mechaical or there was some other issue. Was it a broadside shot? I once drew my bow back then let it down and drew it again. In the process my nock came almost off the bowstring. The arrow flew kinda funny and only penetrated slightly and fell out. That was using a fixed head a long time ago.I did'nt realize what happened until afterwards.Have you killed deer with this set up before?Oh and nice buck in the pic.

yes, i have, i was using a mathews mq1 , set at 70 pounds, but now that you mention it, the arrow did fly funny, and i did pull back my bow and let it back, then pulled back and shot so that could have been the cause, but still the blades on the broadhead never opened, and yes it was a broadside shot
thanks

Nice pic also. I like to use a d-loop for the purpose y'all mentioned and keep the peep aligned. Just a suggestion.

What kind of broadhead? With that set up you should be blowing through broadside deer even with a mechanical.I know my Mathews comes down hard from full draw and it's not uncommon to see the nock try to pop off the string a little.I have seen nocks break too and send the arrow fishtalling bad.

Earlier this season I let down on a shot. I was about to draw again when my arrow fell off the rest. Needless to say, I now check my nock attachment constantly.

I've heard of deer being killed with arrow heads in the chest cavity (from previous hunters) completely healed. Deer are tough critters.

If you guys would go to a string loop you wouldn't have all these arrows falling off the string when you let down. PLUS, the string serving will outlast the string. If you have a big jawed release it might require a larger loop or do what I did.... went to a smaller release. Any excuse to buy something new you understand.<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> I don't know. There's just to many horror stories with these &quot;dad-burn&quot; mechanicals. I could get an inch of penetration with NO head on the arrow.

I know,I'm just hesitant to change and have one less thing to worry about, a loop slipping or breaking. Not to mention changing my anchor point or draw length.Maybe when I get that new Bowtech.I don't think this was a &quot;mechanical&quot; broadhead failure.Something happened to effect the arow flight. That set up should blow through a deer.

I have to say I agree with cajun I myself don't use mechanicals just becouse muzzy's always work for me and I don't see a reason to change. I have done some of my own reasearch on mechanicals and most of the newer styles are good broad heads some styles it is even impossible for the blades to not open. From what j wag say's I too believe that some thing happend that caused that arrow to fly bad and have poor penetration he stated that he did draw and then let down and this will some times cause your nock to come off the string. In this case it sounds like the problem. Next time make sure you check your nock if you draw and then let down.
