Summit Safety Ropes w/Prussic Hitch
#1
Hey guys, just wondering where you might by these other than direct w/summit. Not Cabelas or Bass Pro either. They have too much mark up. I want to get about three or four to use with my lock ons. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Somebody had a special last year, or maybe it was Summitt themselves. It was a kit with 3 of the 30 foot ropes in it at a decent price. Buy them that way instead of individually. I'm sure it was Summitt. For gosh sakes, they're not that expensive when you consider they could save your neck. You can run all over heck to save what...$4 bucks???? You're worried about the gouging mark up on a $30 piece of equipment? It's all in your mind.

I purchased mine through summit and they did have some discounting if you bought a few at a time.I believe they were like ten bucks a piece.Quite honestly they are pretty cheap,I priced making my own with similar rope and it was no less expensive.

You know I get sick and tired of people mouthing off about me trying to save a few bucks. I live a decent life but I try to save every dollar I can. Even if it means shopping around for a life saving piece of equipment. So, if you are able to just run out and buy whatever you want, when you want it, go for it. But when I ask for some suggestions on finding a deal on a piece of equipment, don't give your attitude, just give me useful info.
Thanks, LT

Well the deal is you'd already elliminated the biggest discounters going, Cabelas and Bass Pro. They buy in super large quanitities and do try to out price the market on a lot of things. They don't always do it of course, but that's their speel. Summit wants to make a little profit so they can survive some smuck suiting them when he doesn't use something right and falls and breaks his fool neck. You can shop for a year and not save more than a couple bucks. It's not like you're buying a car. What you're looking for is someone to give them to you. Well, unless he's a business man that wants to go out of business he can't. He does have a mark up. He also DOES have overhead, and employees, employee taxes and social security to cover, a large cash outlay for stocking the stores etc etc. You're not looking to save a few bucks. You want to have someone hear your sob story and give them to you. That way he can bite the bullet, not make a profit, not keep good employees and eventually go out of business. If you don't want to buy from the big boys, check your local shop and buy from the guy you want to stay in business, or whine and beg from the guy you want to go out of business. You're not trying to save a few bucks, you're looking for a gift. Now that's an attitude post.[8D]

If you are capable of tying knots, I would suggest you try making your own. Mind you, there are good ropes to use, and bad ones, but if you do it right, you can make them cheap and great.
You can find instructions for the Prussic knot on the internet. For the larger rope, I went to cheaperthandirt.com. They sell/sold lengths of climbing rope at cheap prices. They were just the ends that were left over from other mountaineering companies, but they will work just fine. I then went to EMS.com and bought the smaller diameter rope for the prusic knot. Once I had everything, I made my own. Don't quote me on this, but I think I made 9 or 10 for under 50 bucks.
I believe you need some type of rope called kernmantle, but again, this was a few years ago and I don't remember for sure. You need to buy the mountain rope for sure though, not the cheap plastic rope that most stores sell.
There was an entire article in a magazine either last year or two. I think it was in Field and Stream, not positive though. I'll look for it, and I'll post it for you if I find it. Maybe somebody else knows exactly what you need.

Not exactly what I was talking about, but these will get you started:
Base rope:
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ROPE305-1012-584.html
Prussic Knot Rope:
http://www.ems.com/catalog/product_detail_square.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=8455 24441775679&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=253437430287 5257&bmUID=1151246751518
Instructions: (near the bottom)
http://www.sailingteam.calpoly.edu/knots.html
Hope this helps
Steven
PS. For reference when shopping...I think the base rope needs to be atleast 9mm and the prussic rope(cord) needs to be 4.5 or bigger.

Hey Davidmil, what got up your A&$? I was simply stating a fact that I would like to save a few bucks and you went off the deep end dude. If anyone is giving a sob story it's you telling the general public how Bass Pro and Cabelas are staying in business. By the way, if you check prices and compare between Summit and the others, Summit generally has the better price. And by the way, what gives you the idea that I want sh&t for free. No sob story here buddy. I work 5 days a week 40 hrs and I am on call 24/7 so don't give me your BS observations. You must work for a Box Store or something. Are you suffering some kinda profit loss? Or maybe you get some kinda kickback. Hey, it's opinions like yours that HNI could do without. So sit back in your chair of ease and pick on someone else about their sob story. Maybe you could give some "helpful" advice instead of belittling, degrading comments about a man's welfare.
And by the way, your post did have attitude. BAD!!!
