2 Bucks in 1 week
 

I recently put up a post last week showing my 11 point buck taken in NJ. Last night "exactly one week later" I got a chance at another one.
I was hunting a ground blind on the edge of a soybean field with a small lot of oaks seperating it from the swamp behind my lake. I only went to this stand because I was late getting in and this site proved to be easy access without disturbing anything going to it.
I got in the blind, which is a natural blind around 4pm, at 5pm a nice doe walked out from the back edge of the field and started browsing on the soybeans. After about 20 minutes she seemed to be browsing toward me so I stood up and readided my bow, hoping for some freezer meat. Out of the corner of my eye I see movement from a group of deer that had snuck out in the field to my right while I was watching the doe. I watched them for 30 seconds browse out toward the doe when out of the corner of my eye from the same direction I see a big body walking toward the corner of the woods where I was standing. I couldnt tell what it was at this point cause the light was getting low, all I knew was it was pretty big and if it presented a shot I was taking it! It turned at 20 yards and gave me a high shot through the fork of a tree so I stood on my tip-toes and drew and let it fly. Hoping for a high lung shot I ended up spining the deer and it dropped right there! When I realized that it couldnt get to its feet I came out from behind the blind and laid another one in to end its suffering. Still not knowing what I had shot I waited till I thought it had expired and went to see. To my amazement it was a 12 point. A 5x5 with 2 kickers on the right side. The horns are rather dark which is why I couldnt see them in the low light.
Man, Im having a good year here in NJ and MUZZY Broadheads are knockin em' down.

congrats on the nice buck. I wish I was a lucky as I have only seen a spike buck so far and let him walk. Lots of does around but no shooters so far. Congrats again on a fine buck

I didnt try to make it sound huge, I has 5 on one side that are real high and 5 on the other side that are low and two kicker pionts.

I'm not so sure I like the whole shooting at a deer and not knowing if its a buck or doe cuz its in too thick of brush or too dark, and then the "hoping" for a high lung shot at best, but congrats anyways. Its two more deer than I've gotten this year.

I shot an arrow into the air... and where it landed I knew there was hair.<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> I think I'm with Zarr on that point.

But, congrats on the deer. They do come in bunches sometimes. I shot one on a Saturday, shot one on Monday and one on the Next saturday in a different state. Fortunately... I didn't have to butcher any of them. People wanted them.

Sounds like your having a grat season! What Zone are you hunting? I'm going to Zone 2 tomorrow. You've got a long wait till early Muzzle for your next buck but you must be psyched.

Congratulations, nice deer. I am in a area that I needed to shoot a doe first I did that 2 weeks ago, now I am after one of the bucks I saw early in the year. I hope to get one this weekend.

Hey Zarr, If your able to take either a doe or buck legally what is the problem?
He saw a big deer that would put much meat in the freezer, the fact that it turned out to be a buck is a bonus.
Have you ever seen a swamp buck with horns that are almost black, They are hard to see in low light conditions.
He wasn't expecting to kill a buck when he went out, I know he told me before his hunt.(What average hunter expects to shoot two nice bucks in 1 week?) Since he didn't see antlers why would he hold back especially considering if he was wrong he had a buck tag to back it up. It's easy to judge in hindsight but we all know that at the moment of truth the decision is made in seconds. I say good call!
As for the high shot, their is a crotch where two trees meet, If you don't come in a little high you risk a deflected shot. Then we would be hearing about how that shot was bad.

I would like to adress this issue. First Bowdaddy if he was supposed to kill a doe before the second buck then what he did was illegal. Second any one that has taken a hunter's saftey coarse should have learned that you are supposed to POSITIVLY IDENTIFY YOUR TARGET BEFORE SHOOTING!. That includes knowing if the deer is a buck or doe. If he was suposed to kill a doe first then that buck that he his posting pictures of on the internet is illegal. But I don't know NJ. law so maybe it is legal but non the less he should identify his target a little better before shooting next time. What if what he thought was a deer wasn't? I mean not knowing if it was a buck or doe then maybe he could have been mistaken and it could have been a person?

his deer is a nice deer it's great that he has had good luck. However if he was supposed to take a doe before he shot that buck than that's illegal and YES that is wrong. There is also no question that he should have known what he was shooting at before he shot. Maybe he did have a legal buck tag I don't know if he did great. I live in an area where poaching has become an exepted thing and people brag and gloat about paoching as it is second nature that is why I take such offense to people shooting deer out of season or with out a tag or shooting more than they are leagaly allowed. I even know two preachers that poach ALOT I asked them if it was sin since they were lying when they checked the deer in they started telling me some bull about god put animals here for us so they felt they could shoot them if they wanted. I hate seeing people poach even checking a deer in one county when you actualy shot it in another is poaching.

Ok, to dispell all the myths I will answer a few questions.
1. I hunt zone 25
2. I took the first buck at the end of the fall bow season
3. I took the second buck at the start of the permit bow season
4. You are allowed only one buck per season and the order in which you shoot them does not matter.&quot; If you shoot a buck early you make sure its a good one cause your done for that season and then its just unlimited does throughout.

Now, lets not put ingnorance into this and turn what happened out there into something that it is not.

I KNEW MY TARGET AND KNEW ALSO THAT IN FACT IT WAS A DEER, IT WAS ONLY THE SEX OF THE DEER THAT WAS IN QUESTION. DOE OR BUCK IT WAS FREEZER MEAT AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED.

THE SHOT THAT I TOOK WAS NOT OBSTRUCTED BY BRUSH OR BUSHES IT WAS THE FACT THAT I HAD TO SHOOT THROUGH A CROTCH OF A TREE AND I WANTED TO BE SURE THAT I CLEARED IT.

I HAVE BEEN HUNTING FOR 15+ YEARS AND I KNOW THE LAWS BACKWARD AND FORWARD AND HOW TO HUNT ETHICALLY.

JUST REMEMBER THESE QUESTIONS YOU POSED IN THE POST AND ASK YOURSELF THE SAME WHEN ITS TIME FOR YOU TO DRAW DOWN IN A SIMILAR SITUATION.

Sounds to me you have some inside information that the shooter doesn't even have!
And, If you can't tell the difference between a human and a deer you ought to reconsider steping into the woods yourself.
He never said he couldn't make out if it was a deer, He implied he couldn't tell what sex it was.
Seems to me some people are reading into other peoples words to get the result they desire so they have an excuse to bitch and moan about ethics!

Trock, it sounds like some folks have their britches in a bunch so let me ask you some straight questions and hopefully we can dispell some of these harsh feelings and accusations and get along with the congrats again. I hunt in NJ so I know the laws there. For those that don't I will lay out the general regualtions. Each individual season is &quot;earn a buck&quot; meaning you need to shoot and register an antlerless deer prior to taking an antlered deer which in some areas are restricted to 3 points a side or more (which your buck definitely falls into). I'm not sure if your zone falls into antler restriction so I won't even touch that. The permit season started Saturday October 26 meaning a doe would need to be shot and registered that day or Monday morning so you could get your &quot;any deer&quot; transportation tag since in NJ hunting is not allowed on Sunday.

Did you shoot an antlerless deer on Saturday the 26th or in the Morning of Monday the 28th prior to shooting that buck?

Let's get an answer so we can get on to more important things. Thanks.

Wow. Good job on jumping down my throat Bowdaddy. Bravo.

I think I was pretty reserved with what I said to begin with and you guys go getting all defensive. Nice.

I still have a problem with the fact that he could not tell if this deer was a buck or a doe when he shot at it because, in his own words, the light was getting too low. I don't know how the laws in NJ work, but here in IL we have until one half hour after sunset to shoot. Up until the end of legal shooting hours you can easily tell the difference between a buck and a doe. So even if you guys think its okay to just toss an arrow into any random deer standing in the woods, it was most likely still past shooting hours.

As far as the shot itself....it was a spine shot, great. One of those lucky bad shots that kills a deer in its tracks. Again, I PERSONALLY don't agree with taking anything less than a sure shot, but to each their own. The deer is in the freezer now and that's all that matters.

I'm not one to really throw stones at people, but that's just what I think. I'm glad he got a shot, I'm glad he retrieved the animal, and I'm glad he's got the meat on the table. That doesn't mean I have to agree with the way it was harvested.

Would you listen to yourself for one minute? Yeah, I have 15 posts here. What does that have to do with anything. And how many of those 15 have you read? 2 maybe. Please point out to me where I whined or critized anyone or anything. Just because my opinion doesn't agree with someone else's doesn't necessarily mean I'm whining or criticizing someone.

I started off saying that I did not agree with the way someone else did something. I didn't crticize it. Someone else jumped down MY throat and came after me so I defended myself. What is so wrong with that? I'm sure there are plenty of people who agree with what I said too. In fact, I'm pretty sure I have a good solid arguement for my case here. And by the way.....I love the comment about shooting deer in real life vs. talking about it on the internet. As if shooting MORE deer makes you a better hunter. Its people like you that go out and give good hunters like me a bad name.

6ptsika, I'm not assuming anything, simply asking a question. If his zone is not an &quot;earn a buck&quot; zone he can say so. I know that the majority (I thought all were, but if not my mistake) are &quot;earn a buck&quot; and I hope that he got one Saturday or Monday morning, because that would be one helluva a week of hunting. If his zone is not &quot;earn a buck&quot; that is still two fine bucks in a week which is a great accomplishment. So please don't assume that I am assuming anything.

Midwest, I don't know that anyone has tried to degrade his achievement. As far as I can see, most everyone has congratulated Trock on his buck. Some questioned his shot decision, but as far as I'm concerned that's his decision. I'm sure he would not have taken the shot if he had doubts as to whether or not he would have harvested the deer. They may not have taken that shot, but it was his personal decision. There are other questions about whether he followed his state's regulations or not. That is not a personal decision, that is following the law. No one has made any accusations, just asked questions. I don't really see a problem with that. Do you?

You are wrong, each season and zone is NOT earn a buck, only certain zones in certain seasons.

I just hate when people jump all over someone without knowing the story. I know someyimes it's jealousy, sometimes it's just a bad day, sometimes it's just trying to stir the pot, all kind of reasons.
I don't know the reaosns for the people here, and I won't guess.
I just think it's sad is all.
A skilled and ethical hunter took some nice bucks, and as can be expected, people jumped on him about it.

No question the shot was marginial alot of people would have waited but that was his choice. Second I congadulate him IF THEY WERE KILLED LEAGALY. I said in my post I didn't know what the law was and that I hoped it was legal. Now does any one know what the law is in zone 25? A few people keep saying don't assume what the law is well if you guy's hunt there tell us don't keep dancing around the subject! I am not accusing him of any thing I give him the benifit of the doubt but........ some thing does sound fishy here. I don't care who likes it I personaly WILL NOT TOLERATE POACHING! If some one is I garuntee you I will be on your rear end.
