Default hunting tip

the other day i was talking to this guy and he said that he has had good luck using the pee from a deer he previously harvested. he would collect it and use it instead of the expensive scents on the market. Since it is free i thought i might give it a try. I haven't heard of anyone doing this. Does anyone here do this and does anyone have other hunting tips?

I'm pretty sure it won't work too well because within a couple of hours urine turns into ammonia from contact with the outside world (ie. oxygen I think). At least thats what I've heard.

the tarsal glands will work but after a day it will turn into ammonia so you have to use them wuick before they go bad and if they go bad deer wont go around them for a while

I do. When I gut the deer I remove the bladder and pout the pea in a bottle. Just a little honkey trick, don't tell anyone.

I do and keep what ever in the freezer until needed, not sure it's all that affective. I have tried scents and prefer to just be scent free as possible while setting up on travel routes. I just let them think it's just another beautiful day in the neighbor hood and then introduce them to my little friend, zippy!

I just try to keep things as natural as possible.

does freezing it affect it ? I don't freeze store bought pee. The guy i talked to thought that it worked better letting it age .
I'm not sure if this is a good idea or bad

I've seen it change after being thawed. It comes out as it goes in and after a while turns to what is sold in the stores is all I can say. I save what ever I think atracts other deer (and warn the wife ). Shot a doe once while hunting with a new hunter. As I was dressing it I told the young man to go and keep watch, a buck may come. He did and less than 15 min. later got a shot at a very nice buck. It can work but this deer was on her normal path (natural).

Not a fan of scents....it's too easy to misuse them and spook them. As scentless as possible and rely on my calls.

I also know a guy that uses the tarsal glands. He freezes them in plastic bags till he is ready for them. I just don't use scents but do use calls. Found them particularly effective in PA and IL.

I don't bother with the pee. However, I will harvest and freeze buck and doe tarsal glands. I go to the butcher shop during our late Oct muzzleloader season and will harvest the tarsals (with permission) from the deer stacked in thetractortrailor cooler. If I take a doe that isin/near estrous, Iwill also harvest her uterus - the major reproductive organ that gives rise to the fallopian tubes. I handle everything with plastic gloves and generally only use them when I am using a decoy(s). The "natural" odor helps (?)the deer linger longer aroundmy decoy(s);deer havebedded down right next to the decoys - hard to argue withthe trouble to harvest and freeze them.
