I am interested in going on my first elk hunt but don't know where to go or who to use. A friend has used a guy in new mexico that was horrible in terms of his professionalism (lack thereof), though he does have access to private land and has been successful. Still, i am not interested in spending $5000 for a trip to put up with an unprofessional operation.
does anyone here have any experience or recommendations for a good operation at a reasonable price?

I assume you want a guided hunt correct? Alittle more info might be helpfull, like what state do you want to hunt in? Do you want to trophy hunt for big bulls, or be happy with a meat hunt for cows or any size bulls? Also how much money do you want to spend. I know of several outfitters that offer "meat" hunts for any elk in their units, here in Idaho. The hunt for the week cost around $3000, on the other hand I know of outfitters guiding in trophy units and they charge around $7000 because they have big bulls running around thier units. There are many choices so you need to list your wants and needs and go from there.

having never travelled for hunting, i'm not sure what my priorities are, but to answer a few questions you raised, I don't need a trophy, but certainly don't want to cow hunt. A respectable bull is desired.
no preference on the state, more interested in finding a quality outfitter who is professional, access to private land with decent bull hunting opportunities. Like most, I don't want to pay more than i need to but was hoping I could do an "all in trip" for $5000.
I think that covers most of your questions. thx for the help

An "all in" trip for $5000 should be doable, but keep in mind that probably puts the outfitter in the $3500 neighborhood. Cost on top of the outfitter:
- airline tickets, assuming you have to fly, 300-500
- license fees, probably in the area of $500 for license plus elk tag
- possible rental car
- extra "baggage" fees coming home with meat/antlers/cape
- butcher fees
Of course those last two are only if you get one
