Anyone want to see a 150-class yearling?

Sorry I can't get the pic to rotate correctly... I've spent the last twenty minutes trying to get it right on photobucket; it's imported correctly, but when I link to it here, it turns like this. Oh well, you get the idea...

One of our downtown merchants also raises deer on the side, and this is a 1 and 1/2 year-old of his that he's pretty proud of. A true 7 x 7... extremely rare. He told me he's been offered $50,000 for him by at least six different people already.

He actually grosses 148 7/8" right now, with 20" main beams and an inside spread of 17 1/8".

Wished I could have got the pic fixed...

RE: Anyone want to see a 150-class yearling?

Yeah, this one is a bit smaller in inches than the world's largest yearling, but he's much more typical and "prettier," I think... I enjoy talking to this gentleman; I was explaining to Bols about how networked this industry is. I mean, these guys keep track of every big deer in the country. It's why the people involved with stealing Goliath didn't stand a chance... The deer are also almost all related, too. They'll buy "straws" of semen from all the top deer, and a couple years later, they're matching them up with someone else's from a similar strand... Genetics plays such a big role in all this...

you pump enough food into a pet and it'll get fat in a hurry. this deer is no different ........... I'm tickled he's raising him so well, but what does this have to do with bowhunting ? I mean, its a great deer ranching thing but other than that ...........

It is a very nice deer but I don't quite understand it's relevence either. What does the guy intend to do with it? sell it? for what?

Probably has nothing to do with actually bowhunting... other than most bowhunters share a love for big antlers, and seeing them on such a young deer was simply amazing to me; I thought it would be to my other friends here as well. Sorry I pooped in your Cheerios.

That's just crazy!

It would be totally illegal and probably just a bad idea, but I'm a philanthropist at heart. I'd love to raise a little herd of bucks like that and...Oops! Let those genes out into the woods around town where I live and hunt.

Maybe insert some tiny micro-radio chip in their skull caps too, just so I can drive around town and find out whose wall their hanging on in a couple years! :D:D:D

DO NOT SELL, that deer is priceless!!!

RE: Anyone want to see a 150-class yearling?

This may not apply to this particular deer, but It does to many other non typical farm raised deer.
I have always heard that antler irregularities are due to bone trauma. All these wierd farm raised non-typs with crazy racks, how do they become? I would conclude that the farmers are breaking legs and such to induce the abnormal growth.
Is this correct? I would hope not!

Greg / MO 03-14-2006 01:18 PM

RE: Anyone want to see a 150-class yearling?

lpv77, I don't think that rumor is correct at all. I have the chance to engage this particular gentleman in converstation quite frequently, and I know he would never stand for that kind of treatment to any deer he knew about. More correctly, it goes back to the gene pool and management of these deer; once a "strain" of non-typicals start appearing, they manage for that particular character trait, and vice-versa for the typicals. This gentleman has showed me several generations of deer and how they follow their heritage and lineage, as well as the results of introducing new lineages into a bloodline. It's all pretty amazing.

Hmmm... don't know what could be going on there, whitecloud -- I've never had anyone not be able to see a pic I've posted since I've went to using photobucket.com... Are you on a dial-up or something?

That first pic that shows his front chest proves he is no 1.5 year old. That deer is too blocky. You guys can jump all over me but there is no way a buck's physiology can change that much with good nutrition. He's a nice deer but no way he is 1.5 years old.

I find it hard to believe a deer with a shoulder hump and such a pronounced brisket is only 1 1/2 years old. Must be a steroid baby.

great buck, IMO it the nose makes it look older than a yearling. not that i doubt u, just saying what i think

Greg / MO 03-15-2006 08:05 PM

RE: Anyone want to see a 150-class yearling?

I'm not gonna argue; it's not my deer, nor do I have any vested interest in it -- save the fact that I just enjoyed looking at him and thought others would too.

I would think, though, that comparing pen-raised deer to our experiences of seeing wild deer at various stages are probably akin to comparingyoung deer and mature bucks: same species, but are they really? ;)

hillbillyhunter1 03-15-2006 08:21 PM

RE: Anyone want to see a 150-class yearling?

What would you assume is that deer's final destination???????????

Greg / MO 03-15-2006 08:47 PM

RE: Anyone want to see a 150-class yearling?

I'm thinking he's just gonna be used as a breeder; the owner will continue to sell straws of semen to other farms. His wife has given him the OK to sell him, but since he's had him since he was a fawn, he says he's kinda attached to him. Sounds as though he can probably make tons of money just selling the straws.

I understand the gist of your question, though. I know this guy only raises deer as a hobby, for personal enjoyment. None of his animals ever get set up in some kind of stupid canned hunt. What happens once they're sold or traded, I can't speak to...
