Default And you thought you had bad luck!

I have been after a monster buck for the last three years. Sunday afternoon I went out in further pursuit of him. However, all I saw were a couple of does. Where I hunt is mainly flat. On oneside of the property is a swamp then about 100yards of oaks then a cornfield thats 200 yards wide and 500 yards long. On the other side of the corn is another stretch of oaks with a stream in the middle. On the other side of that is a beanfield that about 300 acres. I couldn't have designed a better spot. Anyway heres the bad luck part of the story. Theres a state route on the end of the property that I park by. On my way back to my truck at dark I jumped a deer but could not see what it was. A few seconds later a semi comes down the road and I hear a crack like someone pulled out and got hit. So I run over and guess what. That monster buck I have been chasing is laying on the gaurdrail. He was absolute mush. I grabed his antlers and one side just pulled out of his head. He is a non-typical 12 point with two droptines. One is 8 and a half inches and the other is just over 9 inches. As I sat there all I could think of was This monster should not have gone this way. It brought a tear to my eyes.

Man that sucks. You put all that time and effort into that one deer and it had to end like that. Maybe you will get a chance at a bigger and better deer someday.

Those 12 points and two drop tines didn't hold much clout witht he semi. Goes to show it ain't all in the horns. The massive rack doesn't make the deer any less worthy of road kill than a doe, or spike, or whatever form of deer is perceived as inferior. The deer that have enough wit to keep out of the road are proving the superior ones, racks or not, for they live to fight another day. Sorry you didn't get your deer though.

God bless,
Brandan
