Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I accidently killed two deer with my bow tonight and I only had a tag for one. [:@]I didn't mean to...They came in right at last light and I couldn't see the second one.I don't feel like it was my fault.
I made a perfect double lung 30 yardshot on the first one and she didn't go far.(She dressed out at 120 pounds, I know because I weighed her). The way things looked when I got down,I suspected there was a second deer that I couldn't see. I can't explain it, I just knew somehow I had killed two; after I shot there were all kinds of deer running around that I hadn't seen when I zeroed in on this old gal. I felt like such an idiot. Ididn't find much of a blood trail in my search for the seconddeer.I would have to say that the blood trail I followed belonged to the big doe.I did remember seeing two deer leave together after the shot though. Finally after painstakingly going through everything in my head I sorted things out and found the second deer. It was very difficult to do inthe darkbecause all I had was a little three bulb LED light. When I finally came across it I felt bad. It was just a little one.It bothered me so much that even though I have a couple of tags left I might not kill anymore deer this year, I don't know... What is the right thing to do? Don't tell me to turn myself in because that ain't gonna happen! [:'(] ...Does this mean I should quit bow hunting??? :([:o][&o] |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I don't understand why you didn't just tag the second deer if you "still have a couple tags left"?[&:]Or do you have a couple buck only tags left?
...Does this mean I should quit bow hunting??? Take the second deer and donate it to a needy family so someone will benefit from your mistake. |

I don't feel like it was my fault. Hey ! It was you who shot, wasn't it ? |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
Why ask what the right thing to do is if your not gonna turn yourself in? Your better off just keeping it quiet. No need to post on a message board about how you accidentally broke the law.

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
schtuff happens. it is just one of those things. if I were you, I think I'd just put the next days tag on it. I had something similar like this happen to me earlier this year. put a lame deer down after taking a healthy one. game warden was skeptical, but finally convinced, gave me another tag (you are only allowed one a day in my county). of course, I feel that if I had to do it again, I'd just tag it with another tag for the next day because game wardens are like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get. NO, I wouldn't quit bowhunting. I've had worse things happen to me and I am still at it. aka, hitting and not recovering a deer.

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
You should be turned in to the authorities!jmho.Oh,where did you say this happened again?
|
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
This will get interesting...pass the popcorn.
|
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
Isn't this what they call a bonus tag. I say great shot if you dropped two with one shot. Don't turn yourself in because the gamewarden doesn't care about a mistaken shot.He only cares to get another ticket written. Be more carefull next time and take two with one shot when you have two tags.

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
No kidding. glad I brought my lunch today.
I don't think you should quit bowhunting either. Just maybe be a little more careful of your shot selection. Really pretty amazing though two deer with one arrow, never heard of that being done before! |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
First you don't have a tag, then you say you have extra tags. Which one is it? You made a mistake and your painting yourself into a corner on a public forum. If you have the tag, tag the thing, it's that easy. Take the responsibilty for your actions, tag it, and take it home. But don't let the thing lay there and rot.....that would be the real irresponsible thing to do.

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
Why ask what the right thing to do isif you have already made up your mind that you aren't going to do the right thing? By the way Ken, you basically already turned yourself in if anyone in the Iowa DNR reads this post. It is very easy for authorities to track anyone down through their internet service provider.Good luck.

I did remember seeing two deer leave together after the shot though. Finally after painstakingly going through everything in my head I sorted things out and found the second deer. You were hunting over a bait pile and deer were coming in at last light. (almostdark) You got stuck in your stand a little late (could hear the deer coming) and could just see the doe come to the pile (new fiber optic sights work great)and could not seethe fawn behind her, but knew it was there. (sounds fishy) You shoot and a bunch of deer take off you didn't see. (maybe it wastoo dark) So, you were hunting after hours and "accidently" killed two deer. Guilty! One question, why would you post this on a public forum? |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
Wait until Atlas get a hold of him!!! I think your gulity, I would at least donate the deer.

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
Do you all remember the thread that was bouncing around this week titled "Question of ethics.....first light". Yet another prime example why NOT to shoot in low light. Just another case of lets shoot and hope for the best!

There is no such thing as an accident when you knowingly fire a weapon. What if it wasn't a small deer in the background and it was a small child instead?? It bothered me so much that even though I have a couple of tags left I might not kill anymore deer this year, I don't know... What is the right thing to do? Don't tell me to turn myself in because that ain't gonna happen! RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I'll bite....how did you get perfect arrow flight and penetration on a second deer that you didn't even know was there? I have killed alot of deer with my bow, and have never had an arrow fly threw a deer perfectly that would have killed a second deer if it was standing there. They usually loose alot of steam after zipping threw the rib cage. I'm not calling BS yet........but that sounds kind of remarkable to me. BTW...why oh why come on here and tell the world that you broke the law????

ORIGINAL: TeeJay Do you all remember the thread that was bouncing around this week titled "Question of ethics.....first light". Yet another prime example why NOT to shoot in low light. Just another case of lets shoot and hope for the best! Like others I will not comment anymore than this. But remember Arrows are deadly implements and need treated with the same respect as bullets. We seem to be taking some big chances to fill tags. |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
Sounds like "last light" wasn't enough light. If you couldn't see the other deer it must have been after legal shooting light.
|
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
everyone makes mistakes, and im sure it could've been worse. but to kill and actually go after and recover both seems like the right thing to do. im sure alot of others would see the big blood trail and only follow that, find one deer, and go home with it. just dont let it happen again, as im sure you wont, and i dont think theres a big problem with it. i have to ask did you get a quadruple lung shot?
|
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
here is a question were you hunting from a treestand?
if so seems highly unlikly that the deer would line up perfectly so that the arrow would pass through one deer and into the other. |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
well antler eater, i see you have been on this thread for nearly a half hour now, and no response to any of the questions. man up and answer. you must have expected some of these questions, or been looking forward to them to even have started this ridiculous thread in the first place......
while i do suspect ya were probably hunting a little after shooting light, i dont care. do the right thing, tag the damn deer, and donate the meat to a food bank. paying the processing fee and donating the meat would show you care. and please dont start a thread with a vague i broke the law story again.....wow |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
All that I can say is thank god that it was another deer behind the one that you shot and not another hunter. My question is what in the world are you doing shooting at a deer when it's to dark to tell what's on the other side of it.No please don't quit bowhunting, Iwould hate to think about you being in the woods with a gun shooting deer when it's to dark to see.

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I could really have fun with this one and tell you how I am not going to eat it, perhaps let it rot, can't identify the sex, blah blah blah...But before I get taken away in handcuffs (or it gets locked up)I suppose I better come clean...;)
First of all, it should be pointed out that anyone who shoots a post rut doe with whatever weapon is more than likely guilty of the same act that I am being shunned for...That in itself should be a big clue to the rest of the story. My original post is factual, although I can understand most peoples disgust, as with so many things in life, your interpretation of information will determine your reaction. (I might as well have everyone upset with me,it can't be worse than my little lady's disdain. She is just a tiny bitmad at mefor what I have in the refrigerator at the moment). That saidI do think that there is enough evidence in the post to see that it just doesn't quite jive with what most people concluded happened. It is always interesting to me to see the negative interpretation pushed to the front, I wonder what that tells us about ourselves... Perhaps we will see a few posts edited now. Notice I never said I put an arrow through two deer, I said I killed two deer, which in fact I did. Although it was almost at the end of legal shooting time, there was plenty of light to make the shot (again it was a thirty yarder not what I would consider real close, unless you live out west ;)). Any hunter worth that title would never shoot at a target or an animal that couldn't be identified as well as what is beyond... I couldn't see the second deer because it wasn't standing beside Momma...It WAS IN MOMMA!!! As a result, there was no blood trail to follow to help me find deer number two. That little fetus would have been hard to see in the daylight, in the dark it was very difficult. If one didn't know what to look for and where it would just be another part of the gut pile... As for the tag issue...I suppose I could attempt to tag the fetus but it would just make a grease spot on the sticky side...;) Check out the photo.... ![]() Another ![]() |

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
WTF kind of conclusion did you expect people to come to?
I cant for the life of me understand the point of your original post unless it was simply to stir up a hornets nest. First you make it sound like you were careless at best and a poacher at worst. Then you criticise folks for drawing the conclusion you led them to. This whole thread ought to be deleted. Dont we have a rule about posts that anti hunters could use against us? |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
When was this deer bread? Our first breeding cycle was just 6 weeks ago. I know we are ahead of IA. My apolagies (sp) AE I shouldnt of assumed. Admit it tho you kind of built us up on this one!
|
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I cant honestly say i didn't see this coming.
|
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
TeeJay,
No apology necessary.... I couldn't be absolutely sure of the date. They tell us here that peak breeding time is right around the 17th or 18th of November, my guess is this little fella must be at least that old... |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I didn't post b/c I was skeptical...... You've been here a long time and I've seen enough of your posts to know that didn't sound like something you would do or atleast admit to:D

RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I cant honestly say i didn't see this coming. If you look at the time I posted the original story you will see that it was way past my bedtime (10 0' clock is late for me this time of year). Because I am so slow at typing I normally type a story in my WORD program and then copy and paste. I didn't do that with this one.By the time I got done sketching the story to the point you see I was near comatose :D. Although my original intent was to post the pics and the rest of the story all at the same time it just didn't work out due to the late hour. Rather than lose what I had I let it go through with the thought that I would add the rest the following day..... I really thought people would know something is up...I mean it isn't like I am a brand new member or something...When I got up and saw the responses I just sat on it.. It got more interesting by the hour... |

So you didn't break the law--you're just an idiot, that's sooooo, much better As far as the idiot part goes...well, what can I say; there have been numerous days in my life where I would have to agree with your assessment! :D |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I never seen this comming either, shame on you AE for firing us all up on this post.[:@];)
But i too figured there was a logical explanation for this post...lucky for you.....you dont have to worry about sitting in jail during christmas;) |
RE: Do You Think I Would Get in Trouble For This??
I really thought people would know something is up...I mean it isn't like I am a brand new member or something... Double Creek hit the nail on the head; yes -- there are some people (especially those who haven't "earned" a reputation on here yet) who may have posted something like this and been flogged for it. And probably deservedly so, if the actions had happened as if they had been insinuated to have happened... However, with our dear Antler Eater, I knew there would a rest of the story coming out...;) I could just tell that you were being a bit coy with us. Perhaps you didn't pull it off like you wanted to (sometimes it's hard to get the words to say what you want them to mean; I -- above all -- know this better than most! :DBut there's no way some of the components of the anecdote lined up with your reputation... "I'm not turning myself in"... I mean, c'mon, folks! Antler Eater? Some of you deserve to eat some crow on this one. |
