dohcrxl you are right not alot of cover but enough!I hunted with my brother-In-Law in the morning from the same spot but did not see a thing. He was about 90 yards away from me through some thick brush. At about 8:30 he had a bear come to his tree and sniff around for a little before walking down past me at about 65 yards. So with him hanging around the area we left around 11:00.
I went back out to that spot around 2:00 in the afternoon. I sat all afternoon without seeing anything and being very disgusted, I was getting ready to call it quits for the day at about 6:25. As I stood up I caught a glimpse of movement off to my right at about 75 yards. I seen the body right away and only a glance of the head & I could make out Horns but only looked to be small spikes. He came out of the thick brush and started to feed on a small grassy area75 yards from me.
By this time I was holding my bow and waiting him out. I did not want to spook the deer so I was going to wait till he left the area before getting downif I had to. Well only 5 min. passed from when I first seen him I caught movement out of the corner of my eye to the right of him. Here comes a doe with 2 yearlings walking over next to him and they all stopped at 40 yards. (I ranged a bunch of trees around me during the day so I pretty much knew where all my shots could be taken) When they got to my 40yard marker they stopped and I was at full draw on the big doe but I deceided to let down and not take that long of a shot being it was only the first day. It was 6:32 and getting close to the end of legal shooting hours (7:43) when he just charge at the other 3 deer! Well he ended up at my 40 yard spot and that is when I could see his rack clearly. So I drew back and I had him broadside at 40 yards but I did not take the shot I did not feel comfortabe with the shot so I drew down. When he charged at the other 3 deer, the doe & 1 of the little ones ran up past him away from me and the other little one ran in the opposite direction. Well in a minute the little one that was seperate from the other 2 rejoined them and they were 75 yards from me and walking away. I thought for sure he was going to follow them. So I took out my Primos "Little can" and held it behind my back and tipped it over twice. He really did not pay attention, at least it did not look that way. Then all of a sudden he starts walking straight at me. I could not believe that he was coming. Well he got behind some big trees in front of the one I was in which let me draw on him. He was at a slow walk andclose enough I was a afraid if I tried to stop him he would spook so Iled him a little and when his front shoulder hit my sight pin I hit the release and that is that.
I forgot to mention I had placed 2 scent wicks out to my left with Trails End #307 on them. I'm not sure if the can or the scent brought him to me but I'm sure happy with him. Like I said I thought for sure he was going to follow the doe with th 2 yearlings. By the way I looked at my watch after the shot and it was 6:41 so I had 2 minutes to spare.
Here is another pic from the stand. The big tree tothe right is only one of 4 trees in a clumpthat are that big right there. And when he got behind them there was no way for him to see me.
