Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
He came by last night for the first time and was pretty nervous so I couldn't take any pics.......tonight he hung out just like one of the gang. My target is at 20 yards from my patio so that is how close I am standing to him. I will be interested to see what happens when this guy and the old spike so up at the same time.....the old spike pushes every other buck in the yard around and they are all afraid of him.........even a nice 8. I have not seen them together yet though. The big ol' spike hits the yard every night at 5:30 sharp and this guy rolls in later on.
Cool deer............later on he went and stood in my gazeebo on a 10x10 platform that I built for a base. What a goofy sight that was. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

That buck is a brute, Atlas! Is he safe or are there hunters on the outskirts of your neighborhood?
He's a beauty! |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
Those are some neat photos. That one buck is a monster!
|
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
Now if he runs far enough away from the refuge that someone is able to harvest him, Should they be proud of him or not?
I'm just playin. Boy he is a monster though. Is he the biggest you have running around this year? Are u able to wonder through the refuge and look for sheds? Zach |

RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
Nice deer,
Too bad its Illegal to feed deer in NY; I hope your not breaking any other laws while representing yourself as a hunter. The law is the law, right or wrong; if you don't like it, get it changed, but until then do the right (legal) thing. |

RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
Yeah, we are not allowed to feed the deer either but around where my folks live the deer come in and raid anything they can reach, squirrel feed (Put out to keep the tree rats out of the bird seed), bird feeders or decorations, anything they can get there little mouths on. And if they can't get that they will eat the shrubs, the trees and anything else that appeals to them. My folks just laugh about it now but the numbers are getting huge.. 10-15 deer at a time in the yard and some big ones too. Not a lot of hunting in the area and no gun season in that part of the county so the deer density is thick. I would wager that many, many folks in that neck of the woods put out corn and oats for deer not even knowing it is illegal...

Atlas,
unfortunatley, you have just told me and everyone else all we need to know about your ethics. If you are man enough to choose to break a law, be man enough to admit it; that would be respectable. I'm sorry you chose not to. However, I never accused you of hunting in your backyard; and never said if i agreed with the law or not because its irrelevant; I simply questioned the fact that if you are willing to break the Environmental Conservationslaw in your own back yard, I hope that you are not willing to break the law while your hunting (ie. representing yourself as a hunter). Its your own free will to either follow or break the law; but I would hope all real sportsman TRY to follow and obey all the game / environmental conservation laws; and if they don't agree with one, try to change it. I would have had a lot more respect for you if you hadn't tried to white wash your willfully breaking the law. Prime example was when I got pulled over for speeding last spring, the trooper asked me if i knew why he pulled me over, and I told him "yes, because I was speeding"; I was in the wrong and admitted it, and he let me go with a warning. I'm no angel, but when I'm wrong, and know it, i admit it. jmo |

Atlas....dude I'm sorry if I had to grin a bit at your post when I first read it and saw your pics...here you shoot the first button that walks by and then you're taunted by a monster like that eating your bushes and bird seed...let 'em go and let 'em grow...I love it!;):D

I have seen at least 5 bucks in the last couple years that were bigger then this one........I have video of a 10 and a 12 playfully tangling antlers and pushing each other back and forth and it even picked up the sound of the antlers clicking........neat stuff. I have a nice flock of turkey, rabbits, hawks, bats, squirrels, and deer by the dozen. I get to see the spotted fawns stumble around chasing mom in the spring and then the velvet and spring coats change to antlers and winter coats right before my eyes.........it's not a bad thing, trust me. |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
Nice pics!!
I have no problems throwing some apples, corn or whatever else the deer need to survive a harsh winter on the ground for them.. The DEC has done absolutely NOTHING to curb the unethical poachers in my area so I say screw them. I will never shoot any animal over a pile of food but if I can help them eat than I will. I really enjoy checking my trail cam to see which foods they enjoy more than others. |

That is untrue...........what I do as a hunter has nothing to do with what I do in my yard. So , we would have work ethics, family ethics, ETC... and we would changed our ethics all the time, depending on the situation we were in. If you think about he's right, how many times have we seen a guy convicted of a serious crime be the great neighbor. The guy was a great guy in his community, people loved him. He had two sets ethics also, one he wanted people to believe he, and his true ethics. Did I get this right? |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
ORIGINAL: ghemry So if we use the above logic we can assume people have Hunting ethics and back yard ethics. Back yard ethics has nothing to do with the way we hunt, because people have a different set of ethics for when they hunt. So , we would have work ethics, family ethics, ETC... and we would changed our ethics all the time, depending on the situation we were in. |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
No, what I ask and I over did just to be a #####(fill in the blanks). What we do in our lives has nothing to do with hunting is just plain not true. We all have broken a law, I have stayed in the stand to long(etc). We are all not perfect, and all of us know were not. I just was pointing out the flaw in your logic. You can do what you want in your backyard, but when you hunt, you have different standard. As usual you blew it way out contest and wrote very, well for a lack of a better word, stupid response.
Those are great deer, one would really help your team. Poor Motown is all alone on your team. Get out there and help the guy!!! ****Note I edit because I made no sense and said something stupid!!! Thank Atlas for pointing it out to me!! |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
This is getting out of hand quickly;
First I fail to see where the number of posts a person has could possibly correlate to the validity of their opinion; you just have way more computer time available than I do. I know lots of wind bags who like to comment on everything; however, that doesn't mean they are anymore right or wrong than the next guy, they just like to talk a lot. Secondly, I originally said "I HOPE your not..."; The way I see it, with the possibility of CWD becoming a very serious issue in NY; i feel its a poor choice to feed deer right now till we know how bad the problem is. Unless the deer are now dependent upon human supplimental feeding and are tame pets, they would move on if you stopped feeding them; especially this early in winter after they finished off your shrubs of course. However, my issue was with you not only feeding deer illegally; but the fact that you posted the evidence for your own prossecution as if you are above the law or something; and then when i confronted you on it you tried to lie and cover it up; then make excuses for it. **If you had simply said "I know its illegal, but my landscaping bill is killing me..." I could have respected THAT, and just thought that you were crazy for posting the evidence. ** If you were ticketed tommorow for feeding deer, how would you plead? I hope you would own up to it and plead guilty. Hunters have enough problems in this Liberal state without more headlines about hunters / people feeding deer illegally. Poachers, tresspassers ect... all have excuses and justifications for what they do and it still doesn't make it legal / right. Thats all i was saying. This could have played out a lot differently if you owned up to it instead of blaiming it on your bird feeders. Lastly, some of your comments were amusing, and by the way, I only know what i see you post here; and for you to post your own criminal activity is crazy. By the way, its legal to sit in your stand anytime you want; you just can't shoot before or after legal hours. Believe me, i know law. Have a great day. |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
You are trying to apply two different standards to someone's ethics. Ethics are "doing the right thing". |

To hunt—means to pursue, shoot, kill or capture (other than trap) wildlife and includes all lesser acts that disturb or worry wildlife whether or not they result in taking. Hunting also includes all acts to assist another person in taking wildlife. Go sit in the woods in the middle of summer with your shotgun loaded with slugs and see if a game officer cares when you say "I didn't shoot anything" |

RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
wow,
Atlas, I don't know where to begin, try rereading the entire post again and see where you first denied feeding the deer (they were simply eatting the corn, apples, & birdseed you left for the squirels & birds); then you finally admit to feeding them because of the damage they cause to your precious yard. If everyone stops feeding them, they will leave. There are a ton of people (members & guests) who don't know your "Unigue" situation where these "poor, dumb, immobile" deer can't leave you yard; must be you live on an island or a high fensed neighborhood. But then again, I guess all these "new" people (who have as much right to this site as you) are required by Atlas LAW to read EVERY archived post on the site before they can respond to Illegal activity they see proudly posted on the net. Sorry, but thats a little high & mighty of you. |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
Atlasman,
Many of your other comments & partial quotes aren't really worth replying too, as anyone who read this whole mess can easily follow what was said. Much of it is off topic & irrelevant to this discussion anyways. As for the "wind bag" comment; I said I know lots of them - I never accused you or anyone else here of being one, As I don't know you but I can see and read your posts. Guilty consience; I hope Not, as it wasn't directed at you. There are a lot of really good people here. I simply feel that your proud display of illegal activity is a slap in the face to everyone here who at least "tries" to obey the laws. If you change the law, I will fully support your right to feed them, until then there is no rational way you can defend your position - its still deliberate and illegal. If you take offense to my posts, I'm sorry, but law is there for a reason I'm sure. I wish you no harm or arrest record, but I think you made a really poor choice promoting your activity and disregard for the DEC & NYS ban on feeding deer. I don't agree with a lot of laws & reg's; but I do my best to try & follow them; and when I screw up, first I don't lie about it, second I sure won't be posting / bragging about it on the net for everyone to see and comment on. But hey, I must be wrong - your neighbor does it too, so it must be ok. But even you have to admit that comment about owning a computer was a little spitefull on your part - I too own a nice shiney computer with a cable modem, I just can't spend as much time surfing this site as you do, nor do I care to - but thats OK. Hopefully we've beated this horse long enough and can move on. Take care. |
RE: Got some pics of a nice buck in my yard
Atlasman, it's a real shame that a few people had to throw this thread right down the old crapper. Most of the replies to this thread just show that a bunch of people are only looking for a fight with any excuse they can find.
You're not doing a thing wrong, regardless of what the law says. I'd bet my bottom dollar that any natural resources policeman would look at what you're doing and keep on walking. That NY law was put on the books to prevent poaching, not save your landscaping and your hard-earned dollars. GET OFF IT GUYS. |
