Default what's important in a crossbow?

I am about to purchase a crossbow and I am out of my element. I've been looking on line and at various outdoor stores and I don't really know what i'm looking at. I've looked at Hortons, ten point, Barnetts to name a few. What is important? recurve or cam? what speed is good? can too much speed be a problem? 150lb. or 175.?
Second question how can Barnett crossbows get so much more speed than the other brands with comp. 175 lb. draws?
Also price is a consideration I've got to stay around $500
Thanks for any help you can give me

look at 10 point and excaliber. i love the excaliber. its a simpler design and lightweigght. if youve ever held a crossbow most are heavy.
