This is my first full season for bowhunting. In the last five years I've been spending in the middle east or on the way there. After several consecutive days with seeing absolutely no deer, today was amazing.
This morning started out cold, dark, and windy. The sun came up, showing that graze haze in the fields, and the yellows and greens on the forest floor. I couldn't hear the normal sounds of leaves crunching or twigs snapping, the wind was howling and seemingly deafening. I looked up while sitting in the tree stand, and there was a bucks head in my shooting lane. As I looked closer, my heart started pounding as I realized I was staring at 10 pristine points on the mammoth head of amammoth whitetail. I practically lost my breath, LoL. I squared up, and came to full draw. 70 lbs never seemed so light. A branch was bouncingup and down out of rhythm in my face, the winds gusting angrily in my temptation to make the kill. The buck took astep, andnibbledat the earth.Just as quickly, he raisedup again and started walking briskly out of theshooting lane. Ilightly whistled to him, like an amateurtrying to get the Kings attention. He stopped, and looked at me formoment. Breathe in, hold, release.......
The arrow just grazed the top his wide shoulders, and slammed into the leaves beside him. In a matter of seconds, the largest buck I've seen this season was a memory. 30 yards might have well been 100. The only I can be thankful for, as I watch him bounding into the fog, is at least the winds didn't cause the arrow to wound, or mame him in any way. He was safely missed, not even a hair was cut. Wow....this has been a great season so far. I can't wait to get back out there in the morning....now I'm on a mission, LoL!
