Default anyone else have a good start to the PA bowseason?

Well, bow season started sat but i could have never expected this. I was really looking forward to stocking the freezer with some doe meat. It was a hot walk into the woods and if this was anything other than opening day i wouldn't have seen anything. I was in stand at least an hour or so before daylight and having being up the whole night before made this hard to stay awake on stand. But as soon as the sun came up, the woods came alive. I knew at this time the deer would be wanting to stock up on all the acorns they could. I choose a stand location about 20 yards or so from some big acorn drops. It was a good thing i took a whole quiver of arrows with me. So about 20 minutes into the season, i see about 8 does running under this power line, some towards my stand and some away. I have no idea what spooked them and I never may. 3 big doe ran directly under my stand and i tried my best to stop them by grunting and whistling. but these deer did not want to stop. Later 2 more did the same thing and i actually got one of them to stop. The shot was about 25 yards and i should have taken more time on the shot. I rushed and ended up missing the quartering away deer cause i didn't really have the bow set in my hand right. Now i was pissed but i decided to calm down. THen i noticed two bucks under the power lines. I had nothing to loss so i grunt twice at them with my call to see what they would do. i thought they had trotted away but they were really circling around...so that they weren't going into the wind! the first buck was about 50-60 yards ahead of the other one and was coming to my stand at like 25 yards but the only way i could shoot was to sit down and shoot under some branches. well this didn't work out right and my arrow hit a branch. the buck only ran about 20 yards but i couldn't get a shot. i was kinda glad cause he was only like a 5-6 point.....then about 5 minutes later, this other buck starts coming toward my stand..a pretty nice 8 point....after messing around my stand without a shot, he decided to walk behind and thats when i took my shot, 15 yards quartering away.....and my rocket sidewinder did the job. I hit him a little far back but the angle made it a half good shot, i got the front of his stomach and his opposite lung....gave him over an hour only to kick him up again. a quick lunch and a quick trail i had my buck...not a real big bodied deer only about 130-135 but an 8 point, my best. so did anyone else have as much as me in pa bow season opener?

Legacy, Congrads on your buck. I gather you must live in one of the 3 pt. to one side counties based on the first buck you shot at. I had a decent 8pt. come into my stand on Sat. evening but didn't take the shot with it being the first day. I went out this morning and filled one of my doe tags. She fed in on acorns for about 45 mins. before giving me a 10 yd. broadside look. I took her through the right shoulder blade and shot through the left shoulder taking the top of the heart off on the way. She went right down and I didn't have to track her at all. The old 75# recurve did it again!

Legacy, congrats on the buck. It sounds like you had a busy morning. Post some pics of your buck if you can. I didn't make it out Saturday because I had to attend a wedding. I didn't mind too much because I have been hunting in NJ for the last month. I hope to get out after work one day this week.

Congrats on your buck. My friend and I each took a doe on opening day, one in the morning and one in the evening. I passed a small buck since I live in Westmoreland County. A doe is better than a small buck to me.

My opener was pretty uneventful. I saw a doe, a small 4 point and a small 6 point in the morning (along with 2 trespassers on my lease, I got them headed in the right direction).
In the evening I saw a coyote but didn't get a shot. That was it. Slow day for there, but there's no such thing as a bad day in the woods. Glad to see some of you had better luck.

Just a small doe for me, but good venison in the house!

Avoid the inevitable until it is absolutely unavoidable!
