shot distance question.
#1
i am shoting 60#DW at 30"DL with 2315 alum arrows with a 100grn magnus stinger. My question is could i take a shot out to 40yrd and still have enough penetration to ethically take a deer. I am asking cause i have had a couple deer come out at 40 yrds and i did not take them cause i was worried abut havein sufficient power to ethically take them. What do yall think???

My opinion....I don't know whether you physically have enough power to kill a deer cleanly at 40 yds....BUT..if you even have the slightest doubt that you don't...hence why you didn't shoot before....then you shouldn't risk taking a shot and wounding the deer. Wait for them to come closer, or move towards them.

yes i am accurate our to 40,,if i wasnt then i would not be askin if my bow had the power,,
2 probs with what u said and the reason i am askin in cause i had a buck that came into the field from other side of field and came to edge of quial buffer,,which is 40yrds and also had a doe come in to field right at the edge of the buffer as well,,and i can move closer unless i had a blind as it is in a field
the only reason i did not take the shot before is cause i did not know if the bow could do it,,if the bow is capable of pushin the arrow fast enough to have the power to take a deer that far out i would have taken the shot before,,that is why i came here for guidance.

Your shooting heavy arrows, with a good draw length and cut on contact broadheads... yes you have enough energy. More importantly is how is your range judging? If you have a rangefinder, I wouldnt hesitate taking a 40 yard shot if your sure you can hit the deer behind the shoulder, but only take the shot if theres little wind, and the deer is relaxed, looking away from you.

I would take the shots at 40 I think you would be surprised on how well it would kill them. I believe this is the age old question on light arrows vs heavier arrows. The light ones will shoot faster but the heavy will carry alot of weight wich will also help penetration. I am not saying you will get a pass through but no one said you need a pass threw to kill a deer. I think it would be fine.

Short answer - Yes.
I think too many people are afraid of taking longer shots. If you practice enough in hunting conditions and are confident in yourself and your equipment, you can make those shots.

It would be helpful to post what kind of bow you are shooting with and at what speed the arrow is traveling if you know it.
I will assume that the arrow is about 29 inches long with 4" vanes. That arrow will weigh about 525 grains. I would guess (assuming a newer bow) that your speed would be about 230 fps or so.
That set up has plenty of energy to pass through an elk at 40 yards never mind a whitetail deer. A big heavy arrow like yours is hard to stop and the stinger on the end only aids penetration.
If you are accurate at 40 yards and you know the distance to the deer then I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer at 40 yards with your set up.
You will start out with about 62 foot pounds of KE at the bow and at 40 yards you will still have about 55 foot pounds of KE.
I am certainly not advocating you do this but that arrow will still have sufficient energy (about 50 ft lbs) at 100 yards to pass through a deer.
