When to use calls?

When to use calls?
As a new whitetail hunter.....can someone give me a reference or link to articles describing the best times (of yr and day) to use different calling techniques? I've always been of the mindset that total silence was the best approach.....but I hear otherwise works well, too (strategically).
My background is turkey and waterfowl hunting. I know from these two endeavors that the one mistake most callers make (in hunting these 2 quarry) is TOO MUCH calling. Sometimes less is more.
Thanks for your help.
Jeff

RE: When to use calls?
Just my experience, but early on a grunt tube will sometimes bring in bucks and does, the closer you get to the rut start using tending grunts and doe in estrous bleats. Fawn bleats tend to get the does at all times of the season. Just what I have experienced in the woods, I'm sure other guys will have suggestions to offer. The one thing I neverdo it call to a deer that is approaching me. The only time I call to a deer I can see is if it is going away from me to try and turn it back.
