Default How to get permission for hunting land....

Well I have found a new way to do, a businesslike approach. I create a formal letter telling them what I intend on asking their permission for, then I createa "hunting resume", so that the people know my hunting past. I send it to them in the mail, in the letter I make sure to include my cell phone number.

I give them a couple of days and I then do a follow up, since many people don't mind hunting, but are concerned about liability, I create a waiver that must be signed and filled out by the owner and the hunter (with a witness there), stating that the owner is not liable for injuries that occur the hunter while hunting. I take this with me when I do the follow up, I dress nice, and show politeness. I have gotten turned down directly, but after I show the waiver and explain it they think about it. I tell them don't rush on the decision and I thank them for their time....

And I get a call back usually the next day!

I just gained more hunting land, 20 acres of timber, and I am still working on more. I got turned down by one person, they did not like hunting (tree huggers), but I am 3 out of 4 so far.

Other than the contacting them by mail part , which I've never had much luck with , that's pretty much how I've gained access to private land over the years . I'll vouch for it's success , I have more totally free places to hunt than I can use , and I still get offered new ones almost every year .

A quick check with your fish and wildlife department may reveal that your state's laws may already indemnify the landowner for allowing access , mine does and even has a downloadable form somewhere on their website that you can print and take with you . Nothing calms an uneasy landowner faster than the comforting knowledge that he need not fear legal repercussions in case of accidents , having it on an official form seems to be especially persuasive .

Thats a good idea. Another one is to offer to work for a farmer here and there throughout the year in trade for hunting the land. They seem to like that. Oh yeah one more thing, when going to a farm for whatever reason always take the time to pet the dog

Yeah sure, why not?? NO, unless you are ready to get shot. I mainly hunt public land. I do have 2 pieces of private property that I also hunt but they are not very big. As far as asking someone that I do not know, never have. Thinking about the resume idea.

You guys actually ask before hunting on other peoples property??? Just kidding. Most farmers in my area don't hunt for one reason or another and welcome bowhunters. Some will swear at you and chase you out of their drive with a shotgun, but most are cool about it.
