Ok, never mind I checked my books and did some searching. Its a good shot with a gun and a poor shot with a bow due to the small vital area between the shoulders and with the great possibility of hitting the shoulder/bone and deflecting the arrow.

My bad, im glad I found this thread though as I always thought it was an ok shot placement. Better I found it now then after the fact.

Well agian, I never take shots like that but in the heat of the moment as you said. I just honestly thought he would continue right to me and walk up to me or wind me, and then not see him the rest of the season. Again, not an excuse for a bad shot though.
BAD shot??? Hope you find him man! Last year I took a shot like this on a doe with my bow. I have always considered this to be an okay/deadly shot to take. I've seen people kill deer like this many times, and have always seen this done on hunting shows! Well, last year like I said I took a shot like this on a doe at 15 yards, first time ever in my 17 years of hunting deer. I put my 20 pin where here neck and body meant. I released, saw where I hit (arrow was sticking out), she jumped 10ft in the air (not that high, butu get the point), before she hit the ground it look like a fountain of blood coming out ofher chest. She ran past me hauling butt, and I heard a loud crash back behind me. I trailed her anyway for practice, and it looked like somebody was throwing cups of blood on the ground. She ran 40-50yards tops, and that was it. I shot maybe a 1" or 2" to left of where I was aiming on her. Not only did I hit her lung (destroyed), but I also nick the heart.

lupus, I'm assuming that you were in a tree when you took that shot. Because there is no way you could get a lung, heart and hit where the neck and body meet from the ground. That would be different all together. Anyway, I hope he found him.

No, I was not in a tree stand. I was on the ground with her coming right at me. Here's a pic.(random doe)of what I mean, the red dot is close to where I hit her. Where the bottom of the neck meets the body, or at least in my opinion it does lol.

I am hoping to hear from this guy to see if he found his buck or not.I also believe that if the arrow was sticking out quite a ways then he may have lodged it into his shoulder blade. In this case it wont be a fatal wound but it will hobble him. Also it will be hard for him to get that arrow out but he will if he hasnt already.Good luck and hope to see some pic's if you find him.

I didn't want to take a shot like that but I didn't think I had much of an option, maybe that was my mistake.
There are always choices, but you live and learn and one thing that bowhunters learn is that they are just not going to be able to shoot and kill every deer that they have in bow range. Sometimes you just have to pass.

I learned that I won't take a shot on the last day that I would have passed on the first day. I won't take a shot at a buck that I wouldn't take on a doe.

hopefully you'll find your deer, good luck...
