OK Wolfen68,...I have a feeling your waiting to hear from me!

You have thus far received allot of excellent posts and info. I see quite a range of views, and some varying information on what yotes eat though. I'm thinking that opinions are very much determined based on rather you see this animal as a nuisance or not,....which is also somewhat governed by where you live. Apparently Straightarrow and silentassassin see things like I do!

Let me clarify that my "hatred"? for the animals I listed in the other post are VERY real,...but more of a extreme dislike! Intentionally gut shooting them is somewhat overstated. I would take the lethal shot first and always, if presented,....but would not hesitate a less than perfect shot if necessary,....just to take these animals outa the picture!!

My take (on Yotes): I fully realize they are doing what’s natural for them, and I too enjoy hearing them,....to a degree. The "degree" is what’s obviously different for some of us as opposed to others replying and discussing this post. It is no exaggeration to say that I am awaken by coyotes 5 of 7 nights from early summer up to LAST NIGHT in fact. Yea, I could close the windows!! I have found fawns eaten,....most likely alive on my property! I have been awakened by them getting into broods of birds in the middle of the night. A few weeks ago at 5:05PM I was grilling hamburgers out front and heard the yotes carrying on. Next thing I hear a rabbit screaming,...followed by the yotes again. I observed a doe divert a coyote while her fawns laid low in the grass. I happened to be glassing for deer when this happened. My first instinct was to run across the field and chase the yote away,...but was glad I didn't because I would have probably spooked the fawns and that would have been much worse. The doe disappeared into the edge of the field with the yote following her. ~15 minutes later the doe re-appeared, without the yote. What a smart doe!!! A month ago I was watching the groups of bucks and saw 3 yotes sneak along the fence line toward the beech stand where the deer were feeding in the beans along the edge. These were some pretty nice bucks,...yet they all ran for the next county as the yotes closed in. I like a few others see MANY more yote tracks when the snow's on than deer tracks, and believe that the deer find less yote-infested places to frequent because of it. The tracks are often in my yard and OFTEN just a couple feet from my house in the winter when I can see tracks in the snow. Enough examples!

They are an incredibly intelligent animal! Very hard to hunt! Remember they have "dog" intelligence! They are for sure becoming overpopulated and have no natural enemy around these parts except man,...which you can't EVEN count. Their territory is getting smaller and smaller, and their densities are "squeezing" their "home range" and packing them in tighter and tighter.

I'm not sure how many people realize the problems they have with yotes in many suburban areas. Yotes are becoming so accustomed to humans that they walk thru the parks as people are picnicking for example in some suburbs in California and other areas. Thus, human attacks are on the rise in these areas. Mostly small kids! I have read the newspaper articles bro! I should have passed them on to you as I was getting them! Around here the yotes are still afraid of humans because they "ARE HUNTED",....fortunately. I kinda anticipate the future if we don't get them under control around here.

Around here they are VERY hard to hunt because the "long range" shots that you get on them out west don't happen around here. They come in quick and often they are on you before you know it!

You can see that there is possibly a huge difference in what some of us "see" with respect to yotes. Where I live is "tailor made" for yotes even though I'm <10 miles from towns and suburbs. So what I see isn't necessarily what 99% of the population sees.....around here even. Most folks I talk to around here at work (lots of hunters) haven't seen or heard in their whole life what I see in one year with respect to yotes,...and maybe that's the way it is with some on the MB.

As far as "hate". Life's too short to "hate" bro!! And I ain't got it in me,...or the energy. Just call it a healthy dislike. Compare it to if you had carpenter ants infesting your house. What would you do?? LOL

One last point. Can you believe that I am actually going to carry a rabbit distress call while I bowhunt this year? And it ain't for deer buddy! I figure it will give me something to do and wont' spook the deer. Calling and rattling for deer doesn't seem to work for me around here,...probably because of the buck:doe ratio and population or something,...so I'm gonna play around with the rabbit distress call. Should be fun. I'll try to take an ethical shot folks,...but if all I see is an arse end,....well..................

One last thing: Anyone around Rochester NY want to yote hunt????? Just give me a e-mail shout and I'll turn you on to a great area!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!

P.S. krisken,....you might just see me at a shoot someday!

I hold no hatred or disgust for any wild animal.

How boring nature would be if the type of wild animal that existed was limited to that which we hunt. It takes all the species to create the play that we love to attend; and to think about while we deal the with stress and boredom of the brick and concrete world.

We(humans) are the invaders, not the wild animals. Ever stop to think that is they that should be hating us?

Twang, if you have a decent Turkey population, bring along a mouth call. Obviously, you might get a shot at a turkey, but I've been able to get shots each of the last 3 years at coyotes, using a turkey yelp and kee kee to get them to come in.

I kind of stumbled on it one year by accident, I had a large flock of 1st year turkeys and hens roosted very close to me. I took the mouthcall, and talked with them alot before they flew down, when they did come down, they were heading my way "looking for the lost poult" I was pretending to be. After a while of constant yacking on the ground, everything was dead silent, I even heard a couple muffled putts. I hadn't even seen the turkeys yet, so I kept calling like fool. Next thing a full grown coyote was sneaking in from the side. I shot at 15 yds, wish I could say I got him but I missed. The next time I did better.

Now, I'll purposely get the roosted turkeys to talk alot, If all goes quite, I keep on with a kee kee call, and have several more shots on purpose, and one fox. The trick is to use the turkeys, to let you know when they are being stalked, by their silence.

I firmly beleive that the coyotes in my area "key in" on roosted turkeys, and follow the flocks around in the morning.

I sort of we didn't have them, only because I suspect they are at least partially responsible for the demise of our small game populations.

I saw two on Saturday morning while in my stand for the Ohio Whitetail Opener (yeeeehaaww! its here finally)..

I would also say that I am going to try to call them in and hunt them. Everyone says they are very smart creatures and I enjoy a challenge and I enjoy calling in game.

Everything changes.

One door closes, another opens.
