Rutting in PA already?
#1
I had the day off today and went to the woods. I saw 4 bucks this morning, including an 18" or so 8pt chasing does around a little. Now, they werent really running them, but they were actively following them. I could not get a shot at the 8pointer, but watched him for about a 1/2 hr chase a few does and work over a few branches along the way.
Anyone else noticing this already this year? Its early for them to show this behavior I think.

I saw 2 bucks fighting this morning and a buck running does tonight. My dad also saw a buck running does in a completely different area.
Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

In Northern MO, there is still a lot of crops in. Farmers are just now taking in the corn and some of the beans. Starting to cool down though, so we should start gettin' the guys-n-gals datin' here soon.

Bucks are always ready. The does determine the rut. There could be some early does and the bucks will run them obviously, however the best is yet to come...

I saw all these does running toward my stand....and i couldn't figure out why. then about 10 minutes later i saw 2 bucks, one 8 point and one 5 point......i shot the 8 point i think that the bucks were chasing the does around...and i went on the grunt call twice and both bucks came into range giving me shots...i missed the 5 point and then the 8 point walked up like 5 minutes later and i know hes in the freezer

Many times in October I see what seems like rut activity. Just like Rob said, the bucks are always ready, but the does work on a timeclock. If there is any actual breeding going on in PA in October, it is very minimal.
You won`t see the big bucks running does yet, they are more like the smart guys. They will let the young bucks buy the does drinks all night long, then they come in at closing time(november 3-9)and take the ladies home!

I've been seeing some of the same activity here in Southern Ohio lately. Some smaller bucks have been chasing does around a little and on Sunday morning I saw two 6 pointers sparring a little underneath the stand I should have been sitting in had I gotten my butt out of bed on time. This activity seems more playful than anything right now because even after sparring a little, they just kept feeding right next to each other. The biggest bucks are still hanging out together though & don't seem to care too much about does yet. We spotted 7 hanging out together last night. Smallest was an 8 & biggest was a 10.
