Default Had an incredible opening weekend....

despite the hot weather. Unfortunately, i didn't get a shot opportunity at any of the deer I saw.

Saturday morning:

7:15AM

Had an 8 point (probably low 120 class) a 6 point and a small 4 point come in from behind and right. Almost impossible for a right handed bowhunter. They were making so much noise coming in I dismissed it for the cattle coming through the woods, so I didn't even stand up. My mistake , I'll know better next time. At one time the 8 point was 3 steps from the botom of my tree (thank you Scent-Lok). They ended up moving on through never offering me a chance to take a shot. A few minutes later, a doe and 2 yearlings showed up at the feeder. Then the bucks came back and the doe and such ran off, but the bucks never came into one of my clear shooting lanes. Left the stand for camp about 10:15, too dang hot.

Saturday afternoon:

Went out for the evening hunt about 4:30. Set up my pop up blind in a small stand of oaks hoping catch the deer slipping through feeding. About an hour at the blind, a pretty decent 8 point along with a cull 3 point showed up. They stopped about 50 yards out after seeing the blind and refused to come any closer. They eased on about 15 minutes later. An hour later I looked up and almost fell off my stool. I was watching a 140 class 10 point coming in along with another 8 point and a 6 point and a couple of does. As the first couple of deer did, they hung up after seeing the blind. The 10 point actually came into range at on time but did not stay long enough for me to reposition for a shot. The does antagonized me for another 30 minutes by sneaking up closer to the blind all the while doing the typical foot stomping, then snorting and running off only to return again a couple of minutes later and do the same thing. This went on for almost another hour. A couple more does came in and did the same thing until it got too dark to see.

Sunday morning:

Back to stand 1. Pretty windy this morning. Scent Lok has to be working overtime considering I've been here since Friday night sweating like a pig, and unable to take a real bath. Had a cowhorn spike (about 10" spikes) come in to the feeder, but he was wound tighter than a spring. Never presented a shot opportunity. Same doe and yearlings briefly returned, no shot. Nice 6 point came in behind the brush,no shot opportunity.

Overall I was pleased with what I saw, especially all of the bucks. I was suprised to see so many bucks, especially of this quality out and about. Next time I'll remeber my camera.

Good luck all.

Mike

Shoot that big 10pt and then shoot that spike with the 10inch tines. That would be cool to see.

Well you can bet that I have already yanked the blind and hung a lock on stand in it's place. No excuses for this weekend.
