Default Ive got a runway but nowhere to sit

Ive got a great, and I mean great, spot where I see tons of deer activity at all times of the day. To the west is a long patch of evergreens where they bed. To the east is a rather large apple orchard. In between is about 250 yds. of open grass with a pathetic hedgerow about halfway in between. No trees for a stand. Im considering a ground blind but have never hunted from one. Any suggestions or pointers when hunting from a blind?

Wack em and stack em!

Build a natural blind...... It's easy, free, and less suspicious....... Find an old log or a tangle vines and work from there...... Set it up towards the back end of your comfort zone from the trail...... If they get too close, it may be difficult to shoot.

Just get a pop up and conceil it the best you can with branches and stuff. Or and this is what I would do Make one in that little hedge row out of all natural stuff and play the wind. I would find a morning spot on the edge of that bedding area and catch them comming back in also. Go in the back way if possible and watch them come to you. Good luck.

Diga hole in the ground.

That's what I'm doing this year. I have a similar spot with noplace to put a stand. I've tried ground blinds in this spot but it must look like the Empire State building sitting out there to them cause they don't like it. So...... I've dug a pit blind where just my eyeballs will be sticking up above the ground (untill I have to shoot that is).

thats where i would be.
why can`tyouset up something in the hedgerow ?
it is all ready natural, why spook the deer withadding somethingto the area.
just watch the wind and go for it.

Put a blind backed up against the hedgerow, keep the shoot through mesh in place.

I agree with the blind in the hedgerow. Just make sure it is brushed in really well. I am surprised by how often deer ignore a brushed in pop-up blind.

All these ideas are good. You can even try combining a few. Dig down a bit in front of that hedgerow, and build good cover over the area. Use nature, and good luck.

Wait for the wind to get right, tote yourself a folding chair out there to the hedgerow, find yourself a little hidey hole and plop your buns down to hunt. If you have to make a blind, keep it simple and don't disturb the area any more than absolutely necessary.

Think about how you'd feel if someone came into your house, unknown and uninvited, and moved a lamp from one corner of your living room to the other. You'd notice immediately and be kinda freaked about it, until you found out who did it and why. If that same person had simply changed the lightbulb in that lamp from 100 watts to 65 watts, you'd probably never notice. That's the kind of subtlety you have to keep in mind when you're constructing a natural ground blind.

Now, if someone came along and parked a Volkswagon in your living room, you'd darn sure notice that! Even if it was painted to match the carpet, you'd know it was there. That's a popup blind in the woods. If you've got to use one of those things, put it up a week or two ahead of time and let the deer get used to it being there.

For your natural blind though, all you need is a thin screen of brush in front of you, to help break up your outline. It's nice to completely conceal your feet and legs, if possible, so they won't see any movment when you shift into shooting position. The main thing though is to have a thick screen of brush behind your upper body. If you're silhouetted, they can see every little twitch you make. The thick screen of brush behind you will help the thin screen of brush in front conceal the movement of your upper body.

Use face paint, mask or something to cover up your mug and wear dark or camo gloves. Your face and hands shine like a beacon at ground level.

If you use a pop up then make sure you conceal it the best you can with wwhat ever is natural in the field.Break up the edges and the top with grass or whatever vines and branches.I would not hunt it for atleast a week.Give them time to get used to it.Also I would cinsider getting a decent ladder stand and setting up in the apples.it doesnt have to be very high.I hunt a orchard myself.I find that sometimes it is best to set up in a apple tree that has decent cover .I only use 2 srctions of ladder and lean it up against a good size tree. You may have to trim a few branches but I dont think the owner would be upset as long as you didnt butcher the tree. You can also use rope and tie the branches off to the sides and the middle to give yourself some extra cover in front of your stand. You must play the wind and I would suggest using some kind of apple cover scent. You can take and cut up apples and boil them down and use the water that is left to use as a cover spray.
I would also consider setting up a stand in the ever greens. This will conceal you very well.Again you will have to do some trimming and such but it would be a good place. You have the stand in theorchard for the evenings and the stand in the ever greens in the morning.
I am curious as to what you do do and how it works out.Let us know.Or PM me if you have any questions that I may be able to help out with.
I have even used one of the three legged ladders that they use at orchards to set on and got very close. They are used to seeing them all the time and they dont spook them at all.
