You DO NOT have to put your stand up a month early. Put it up the same day if you want to. Just be slow and quiet. Take your time putting your stand up so you don't bang metal and everything else. Now thats a climbing stand. I don't suggest trying to go out the morning of and trying to screw steps into the tree and then getting your stand set up. No.... I'm putting my climber up tomorrow although the season opens next Saturday. But I also know noone else will be coming into my neck of the woods and stealing it.

I am assuming that you are not referring to a climber. That being said, I have had one of my permanant stands set up for about 2 1/2 months now (our season started Sept. 7th) but the only reason for that was I couldn't resist hanging it any longer. I had to get out an feel as if the season was starting <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> I plan on hanging another stand in the next 2-3 weeks (when I get around to it) and will hunt out of it the next day if the weather permits. Just wear rubber boots when entering/ working/ exiting the woods....the deer will "forget" about you and the fact that you were there in just a couple of hours. This is just my experience. Hope it puts your mind at ease.

I think one of the reasons for puting up a stand up early. Is because we have scouted out an area that we know deer are traveling. So that opening day we are set up on deer.Without spooking them and to let them settle back to their normal routines.
I change stand locations as the deer changs theirs through out the season. But i still give it time to settle before hunting there.Thats with chain ons ect...
My climber is a differant story though...That i can take up a tree quietly without disturbing them.
It's not how big the Deer,But the size of the experiance that matters!!

Go ahead and put that stand up and hunt out of it. I have put up stands, hunted out of them the same day and saw deer. I do try to have some stands set up several months before the season starts but these are mainly spots that I know are productive year after year.

Consider; there are many successful hunters that hunt public (government controlled) areas, where their stand must be taken down when they leave for the day and put back up the following day, just minutes before they climb in to hunt.

You can slap up a hang on with some climbong sticks in no time at all and be hunting out of it right then. The whole principle of the climber is that you hunt out of it right then and there. I don't see a problem hanging a stand and hunting it soon, provided you don;t sound like a construction site while putting it up.

I agree with the others. Sooner or later you will find that you are more successful if you routinely move your stand to meet the patterns. I, like most others, have stands up and ready to go for the opener, but will not hesitate to move around after the first couple days. The only real advantage to setting it up early, is to clear lanes, or be SURE that natural openings are good enough - so that you do not have to do it on opening day.
I have a couple stands that are permanent, or portables that never move. They are in historically good areas that at different times during the season WILL be productive. The real trick is to only hunt them when they are productive, and lightly at that. I also try to locate a Hot, early season area for my climber, and put it in at least a few days ahead of hunting it on opening day.
That being said. I approach every hunting day, like I did not have a single stand up and ready to go. Be ready to move into a hot area with a portable hang on, or climber. Like I'm sure has been said on this board 1000 times.......... the first time you hunt a location, is the best chance you will ever have at harvesting a deer.
