Shooting through cornstalks - help
#1
Hey guys. I just need a little input here, and I'd rather not "learn the hard way."
I'll be hunting this season along a cornfield edge, and I was up there scouting and noticed that the cornstalks are still really high - 7-8 feet.
Anyway, I was thinking that I may have to shoot into the corn to hit my target, and the last 5-8 yards of the arrow's trajectory will be buzzing through the cornstalks.
Will I have to wait for an open shot between the rows, or can I just take the shot when I have a little opening? In other words, will those cornstalks knock my arrow off target? I shoot fixed blade Muzzy 100's on 29" gold tips at 295 fps.
I'm thinking that I just need to miss the heavy core of thestalks, and the "leaves" won't have enough density to knock my arrow out of the vitals.
Anybody with some experience please advise.

Very risky, the smallest twig can and will send an arrow off target, the same goes for cornstalks. Unless you 100% sure of your arrows path and a clean hit, simply put, don't take the shot.

I hunt standing corn,,(spot and stalk) And I learned the Hard way,, The smallest pice of anything can and will deflect you arrow, I had just started hunting the corn, (my first year) And stalked up to maybe 15yrds of a nice doe,,my shot was shooting threw the corn not the rows, and to make a long story short, I hit a corn LEAF and ended up putting the arrow in the does backside right in the hip.. lucky for her I saw her again later that day and was able to finish her off,,,, I felt extremly bad about what I had done,, and to this day if I don't have a perfect clear shot,, I won't even think about taking it.... So my sugestion to you is don't take a chance and do what I did...

Unless you are on foot, the deer is only 5 yards away and you have a clear shot, I wouldn't take it. As stated previously, the smallest obstacle will send your arrow off target.
I will not shoot at a deer in a corn field from my stand. It's too risky. I have hunted corn fields on foot before and it is very frustrating. It's noisy and the deer are always 4-5 rows or more away from you. You can see them but they don't present you with a good shot. I would concentrate more on finding where they are entering and exiting the corn fields at and place you stand or blind there.

If you know exactly where you are going to hang your stand, do so and look for a couple places where you feel like you can get a shot at deer. Then, get down and clear your shotting lanes so that no obstructions are present to deflect your arrow--you'll probably have to knock down a few corn plants so make sure it's OK with the landowner before you do it. Corn leaves can and will throw your arrow off course -- don't try to shoot through the it.

Just place your target in some high grass or even better corn and try shooting. You will find that even the most miniscule piece of anything can send your arrow careeining off somewhere unintended. DO NOT shoot through the corn
