Preseason Form
#1
In the never ending quest to improve my form, I'm posting yet another thread asking for critiques.
I am shooting well. I shoot comfortably. I get decent groups out to 60 yards. I hunt. I don't shoot 3D nor do I shoot spots.
However, I would like to have good form at some point in my archery career.
To me, it seems as if I'm still leaning back a bit. Not so much in the first picture, but I think there is a slight backwards lean in the second picture. I could lower my draw length, but I would have to go down another inch. I don't think that I need a whole inch taken off. Do you think that taking it in and having a few more twists put in the string would help any?
I realize that it looks as if my hand isn't relaxed because my fingers seem to have some sort of tension in them. Wrong. I don't know about you, but my fingers don't stick straight out when they're relaxed. They fall naturally.
I don't shoot with a high wrist grip. This makes me hit my arm and is plain uncomfortable. I shoot with a low wrist grip. There is a bone in your hand about where your life line ends that allows for a consistent grip. To me this is most comfortable.
So, what is your take on my form? Anything is going to be appreciated.

And oh by the way, how do you like the white crests with white blazers? So far I'm digging them. I've been pretty impressed by those little vanes. I haven't had a chance to shoot them with my broadheads, but they sure do fly well with my field points.

you appear to have a lean backwards which would indicate the draw length is a bit to long.
you can shorten draw length in small amounts by twisting the string. I just put 4 twists in mine to get a bit shorter. I was perceiving too much motion at 20 yards so I put those twists in it to see if the pin will steady. I'll know after I shoot it awhile and compare my landing spots. I fiddle with my draw lengths a lot to get as little pin motion as i can and if it moves I want it to be smooth not jerky..

Just a quick observation.......I really think your draw length is probably just fine, but you do have a funky lean going on which is actually pulling you away from proper body and head position. I think if you were upright your draw length will fall into place nicely. You are leaning back with your entire upper body and then compensating to get your nose to the string by leaning your head forward. Get everything in a straight up "T" and it should all work out.
Your draw shoulder and elbow are in a surprisingly good positionin spite ofthe curvey spine thing.
Also I know your comfy with it but I don't like either hand'sattitude and I think your bow hand might be a touch too upright and deep into your palm.
One of the best ways to get a feel for how your form should look is to search around the net for pictures of many of teh top competitive archers like Dave Cousins, Jeff Hopkins, Dan McCarthy, eric Griggs, Tony Tazza etc and look at their body, hand, elbow, shoulder and everything position. check archerytalk.com and search around.....you'll find lots of info.
Your form doesn't look terrible and I think you have an OK bow fit but there's definitely room for improvement there to get your body in the proper position to match the bow's actual draw length, work on the hands........and for God's sake man eat a little more at dinner time! I haven't seen a body like that since "Buck Magnet" posted a picture of himself in camo in the woods and I thought he was a sapling.

I agree, I've seen bigger legs on a coffee table.

... Look's like you answered all your own questions to me. If you can kill a deer who gives a rat's mass what your crooked spine look's like??

I would highly recommend picking up a copy of the book Core Archery by Larry Wise. This is one of the best I have read and a good bit of this book is focused on proper form.

As for the pictures, your spine does not look to be perfectly up and down, and your chin is pointed down. Try leveling out that chin parallel to the floor and straightening up with a little better posture.

...Oh, I am in tears....
Laughing with you, not at you. I tend to agree with Matt's assessment though might also suggest trying to bend your bow arm just a tad more. That might make shortening up your draw length a bit more comfortable.
