Default Health Tip

Here is a health tip I found on another board. I have never heard this before and since many of us are or will soon be in the woods I thought I would post it. As I said, I read it on another board so I can't take credit for it, but none the less it is one heck of a tip!!!

Fellow Hunters and Outdoor Enthusiasts,

I read this health tip and thought it would be great to know as we head into another hunting season.

It might be something we need someday.

The example is not hunting related but very important and I thought had value for people hunting alone. It comes from a Rochester NY Hospital.

Good luck, have fun and be safe!

How to survive a Heart Attack when Alone...

Let's say it's 6:15 p.m. and you're driving home (alone of course), after
an unusually hard day on the job.
You're really tired, upset and frustrated.
Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that
starts to radiate out into your arm and up into your jaw.
You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home;
unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far.
What can you do?
You've been trained in CPR but the guy that taught the course neglected
to tell you how to perform it on yourself.
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack,
this article seemed to be in order.

Without help, the person whose heart stops beating properly and who
begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves
by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.
A deep breath should be taken before each cough.
The cough must be deep and prolonged,
as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
And a cough must be repeated about every 2 seconds without let up
until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements
squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm.
In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

Tell as many other people as possible about this,
it could save their lives!

Great tip Brian, especially for our older generation of hunters. I do feel it's hunting related seeing every year you can read of one or two hunters dying out there....Thanks

Thanks for the tip. Hiking in the woods with a pack on makes a person think about these things. Good to find a solution if the problem does ever arrive. I know of at least one person on these boards that experieced an attack at a very young age. So I would'nt count anyone out for risk.

Brirute- You are 100% right on. As a 53 year old I start hiking 6 miles a day for at least 2 months before heading for the mountains. No scary animal jumping you in the woods is as likely as a major heart attack for out of shape hunters. TRUE STORY--Freind in Oregon and his brother decided to become outfitters. Brother owned a ranch in eastern oregon. First clients were five doctors and lawyers from SF on a high country elk hunt. Age 56 to 71. 71 year old hiked hard first day, had pains and was sick. Died at hospital. Same night back at camp the 56 year old was so upset he had a massive heart attack and died on the spot! Lots of jokes about their 40% success rate etc but not funny stuff. Thanks for reminder.

This tip thing is a prank. I saw it on one of my other boards and they uncovered it as a prank.

It doesn't however take away from the serious fact that we should try and be in good shape going into the season and take precautions necessary to make for a safe hunting adventure.

Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

Hey folks,

Wimp is right, my bad. I saw it and it sounded like a good tip. Actually sounds believeable and makes sense. Guess I should have done some research on it.<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle> Well anyways, everybody just be safe out there!! Again, my apologies. <img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

Brirute-No problem as the point is still well taken. Old fat guys may not need to cough 'till they puke but they do need to think about climbing at altitude. Thanks anyway.
