what would you do? maybe state record!
i have spotted a buck that by what i can see, is close to a new state record! i found this buck last year, and he made it though the season and the winter. he eats on private land and beds on public. my ? is = if you had a buck that was withen 5"-10" of a new state record, and the deer is only 3 years old, would you shoot him and hope for the record?
or would you give him a year and hope he is not shot this year and you miss out! show me the light please! i do have him on video, should i take this to the official scorer in the area, to get a better feel for what he scores? thanks everyone![&:] |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
I'd strongly advise you to not show anyone that video unless you shoot that buck.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
125" or more, it's a done deal. New state record? Kind of a silly question for me. There is no guarantees he will be around next year and I don't care where you hunt private, public, or even in a game farm for that matter.
So yes I would take him as soon as he gave me chance. |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
I'd second what James said, and also suggest you spend some more time trying to get more/different looks at the deer to maybe get a better idea of score. To answer your question, with the deer bedding on public land, I would take him at three years if given the opportunity...
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
I strongly agree with James Vee!! Dont show anyone that tape. As soon as you do the entire state will be in those woods. As far as the shot I would take it in a heartbeat if he is really that big. Who cares if he's a few inches short of record, you have the oportunity to hunt one of God's most beautiful and elusive creatures!! But when it all comes down to it, its really a personal decision that only you can make. Good Luck!!

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
What state are you from?
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
Where I hunt, on large acreage that is privatly owned, I would pass on the buck. ONLY because of his age. That buck might lock antlers with another buck and die before I see him again, or maybe coyotes would get him, but thats a change I'm willing to take. We actually have a buck on the ranch that we passed up the last two years because he was not old enough. Last year we aged him at 5 1/2 and his sheds from last year (both found about 100 yds apart) had a NET B&C score of 183" as a typical 12 pointer. WE have killed alot of big deer in the past and we have alot of mature BIG deer still on the ranch and we will always have big deer, so for us, passing up a buck because of his age is an easy chose most of the time. And that 183" that I mentioned above would ACTUALLY be a new Tx state record if somebody where to shoot him with a bow. He would notbreak the state record if killed with a rifle. The current state record tyical killed by a bow was actually taken on a different ranch just 15 miles from ours.

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
Send me the address so I can come and evaluate the buck!:D
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
What state are we talking about? I assume you are talking about a 180+ buck. There are only a very very very few exceptions I would make on a buck like this. If I were on my friends 12k Kansas lease, a very well regulated and controlled ranch in Texas or a very large farm/lease in a trophy state like Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois etc I would let him walk if I thought I had a reasonable chance of seeing this buck again. What I am saying is if I had been watching this buck repeatedly for 3 years and knew he spent his time on a place like I mentioned, then and ONLY then would I take a chance. Otherwise I would PULL THE PLUG on that buck. I don't care how old he is or isn't a 180+ buck in 95% of huntings country is a one in a million deer and I would PROUDLY pull the trigger! If you haven't seen bucks like him ever before in your area he is all the more a freak and a true trophy. Leaving him wouldn't have a large, longterm effect on a normal area.
I agree, don't DARE show that video to anyone, ESPECIALLY someone like a local scorer who knows alot of people and might get word too the WRONG person!!! RA |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
o.k. here we go, i am from wyoming. no he is a whitetail! i have seen him about 4-5 times this year, got him on video 3 times. i got a digital pic. from 100 yards or so. if i know how to post it i would!
this buck is in the 145+ to 155. wyoming record for archery is 153 6/8. my father got a 142" 5x5, two years ago. i have sment alot of time cross checking these two. my problems on size is main beam? it goes out to 1" outside his ears and then swings forward comes to about 12" from touching the tips. i believe the 2 back tines are right at 10"-11" on both sides, eye guards are 4" maybe 5. the last fronts are 5". the big thing is his mass, thick horns, i think 6" bases, i have one in my house with 5" and this guy is heavier. he is with 3 others, 2 of them are in the 120-130 class. and when he stands next to them it is WOW! he towers over them. i will try to get some pics on if i can? i have put a trail camera up, just took it down to get pics. i had it up 3 days and it shows 26 pics. hopefully it is not all does, or elk. if there is something usefull i will try to post. what do think about those # for this guy, is he close! or am i just thinking he is bigger than he is? i mean do you over judge the size when they are in velvet? thanks |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
Worry about a few inches and the possibility of a state record Ssssh!!!! Come on :DIf he's big enough you have to ask yourself if he might make the state book or not SHOOT HIM!@!!!!! :)That would probably be a buck of a lifetime for most and I certainly wouldn't pass it up....Who cares about the book and a few inches if he is in the 180+ range. Maybe if you pass him up and someone else gets him and he does make the book they will give you a copy of the book :D:)

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
if any one has a pic. of a 5x5 150" buck i would love to see it! man i need to see if he would make it!

Manboy:
Here are some clean 150" class ten pointers........ http://www.loscuernos.com/Don%20Risinger%20110604.jpg http://www.loscuernos.com/Stephen%20Paris%20112604.jpg http://www.loscuernos.com/Mark%20Beatke%20112504.jpg http://www.loscuernos.com/Joe%20Clayton%20112604.jpg http://www.loscuernos.com/Charles%20Deriso%20120504.jpg These all break 150" with the biggest going 156". I've got plenty of pictures.......... |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
tx, the 4th pic. is him! it is almost exact! do u know what that deer scored? like 150 or 155? man thanks!
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
You're considering passing up a state record because you think he is 3 .5 years old? How do you know his age? I'm seriously doubting a 150" deer is a state record in your state, wherever it is.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
The buck in the 4th picture has a gross b&C score of 155 3/8". But he also has a split G3, which if deducted would bring the buck down to about 152". So either way your looking at a deer that grosses over 150", but I dont think the buck in picture #4 would net over 150".

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
Manboy may not be the most politically correct person on this board but he is telling the truth about the state archery record in Wyoming.
The state record for a typical whitetail taken with archery equipment is 153 6/8 inches. and two deer tie for the record. The first deer was taken by Steven Blair in 1986 and the second was taken by Raymond Kind in 1999. So ShadowAce, you can now remove your foot from your mouth and speak freely again. [:'(] Just FYI. The nontyical with archery equipment is 162 6/8 inches. Taken in 1995 by Heron Head. Oh I forgot to add that I would most definetly take the buck if given the oportunity. Who knows what could happen to him later in the season if you decide to pass on him. Even if he only ranks in the top ten I would rather have a top ten state deer than find his skelital remains from a harsh winter or predator kill or worse yet someone else shoot him. |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
bigbulls, first off......thanks!;)
tx, that is exactly what is killing me right now! this buck is right at the record. but maybe just under? i have lived in wyoming for 20+ years, i am a taxidermist, i have cut deer for over 10 years so i have a pretty good idea this deer is 3 years old. and the others with him are a little gray comparied to him. there is no way for me to tell how old he is for sure, or what his exact score is, i can only use my judgement. and use the info. i have gotten from this sight! so thanks to you all! i am gettin those pics. done tomorrow, i will try to post a pic. thanks again |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
lol here i am glad i dont have to worry about setting any new state records because if i did i would also have the world record. good ol iowa for ya!
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
Manboy you def. need to pull the plug on your bruiser!!! I am following one very similar currently and if we both get ours then we have a damn good chance and winning the contest! So go team 28 and go get that big boy!
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
Everyone wants to be successful. Dut to me records mean nothing. Killing a deer like that Causes greedand envy and yes even enemies to surface.Kill it ,Thank God and yes show it to friends, but dont make a national monument out of it.AND like someone said dont tell anyone where it is,If you do I guarantee you people will be trying to poach it.Situations like this can get ugly.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
shoot him now. you will kick yourself very very hard if you have the opp and don't, and someone else does. keep the video to yourself unless you want the entire state hunting your spot.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
If you have trouble posting pics....send them to me and i'll post them for you.

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
I can't believe this is even a debate. Shoot it. Be happy and let the score fall where it may.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
or would you give him a year and hope he is not shot this year and you miss out! |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
I'd hunt him and take the shot if it presents itself.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
I think its pathetic the only thing you are thinking about is net score and trying to snag a record here. Hunt him hard, enjoy the outdoors, say a few prayers in your treestand and if you get lucky enough to get a shot at a monster buck ? Take it and be happy regardless of net/gross score

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
While not trying to be modest, I was put in a similar situation two years ago. I had a goal of topping the county record for either largest typical or nontypical buck for archery. I'm located in Douglas County, Wisconsin, you guys can look up the records if you want. I had two typical bucks that I was sure would pass, and one non-typical that I was sure would make it as well. I hunted hard for that NT. On about the 30th day in stand I had the opportunity to take a solid 130" nine point buck. Tempting as it was, I let him walk...knowing that the opportunity to take a world class deer was just around the corner. On day 40 I saw the buck I wanted at 60 yards. And that was as close as I ever got. A neighbor shot him only days after. My point is to do what you are most comfortable with. If you have a goal for yourself you should do whatever you can in your power to accomplish that goal. If your goal is to top that state record for #1 whitetail with archery equipment, I'd say do it now.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
Sounds like acase of , "I caught a 6lb bass" and its really 3.5 or 4 lbs. I would bet money this deer does not break the state record even if he was lucky enough to actually harvest this particular animal. If its fame and money you are after go get on American Idol or Star Search. Or better yet, dont shoot it, yeah leave that 140 class buck for someone with more brains to harvest it. Most bucks are lucky to get past 3 years old.

wow i smell...something...oh it must be you diesel.:D
pabow, that is just it, i don't have any nice whitetails to my credit! any of these 4 bucks would be huge in my book, it is just something when you see the biggen next to the rest of them. is there a way i can put video on this sight? i have a 30 sec. clip of 3 of them, THE BIGGEN, EYE TIN BUCK, AND TH WIDE BUCK. is there a way to show you all this? it is a digital camcorder, but the bucks are on tape. p.s. i hunt a very tough area to get to, most people here will not walk 1-2 miles to reach this area. i have shown this video to huntnmuleys, he and i hunt togather alot so....but i am lucky he likes muleys instead of whitetails. |
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
I would definately take him if I had the chance because you never know what could happen. He may be a year older and bigger but that also means he is most likely smarter and better at avoiding hunters, and its not like its guaranteed you would get a shot that next year but I guess thats your own decision to make.
|
RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
You snooze you loose ... a bird in the hand ... he who hesitates is lost ... opportunity only knocks once ... with that being said if he is larger then anything you have mounted I would say take him if the chance comes ...if you already have one that large on the wall ..well then you might let him go another year ... good luck.

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
If he is as big as you say i would take the shot if it presents itself. If this buck is bedding on public ground there is always a chance he could get shot by someone else, also every year he gets a little smarter and there is a good chance that at 4 1/2 years old he could go strictly nocturnal and you and everyone else may never be seen again.Good Luck!

id shoot him backstrap for the family

I'd let him grow a couple more years to try and raise the bar for the next person who tries to break the state record.

RE: what would you do? maybe state record!
It's already been said ,but I will repeat it. Don't show video or pics or talk to too many locals. I made that mistake last year and have been literally locked out of my property by a club that has the lease next to me. I know it sounnds strange , but it has happened. All because I showed a gamecam pic of a typical that would be the county record where I live to a member of the club that has the lease i mentioned!
