price of gas- will it affect your season?
im already cutting down on my scouting trips and plan to hunt closer to my home this year. my yearly trips to other states will probably be reconsidered also. im still gonna hunt but my eye is on the gas pump.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Gas is around $2.49 a gallon here for the cheap stuff! Definetly reconsidering some of the 40 mile one way hunting trips, and also a fall vacation. [&:]

RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Same here guys better planning, fewer trips, changed both of my
vacation weeks to the end of nov.and christmas week, glad I kept my little Dakota and didnt get the 4 wheel drive I was look ing at,still getting my new four wheeler so lucked out there, good luck this coming season! ![]() |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Thankfully not too much.
I hunt public land here and it is almost across the street. The tahoe still sucks up gas when traveling at slow speeds in first or second gear on the hilly dirt roads though. I was at the gas pump today. When I pulled in the price was 2.36 for regular.[&:] As I was pumping the attendant changed the sign to 2.45 for regular.[:@] I'm glad I got there when I did. |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Absolutely! I cannot afford $120 a weekend to go hunting. Gonna stay closer to home this year, and not as many trips south. Man, does this stink!!
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I tend to plan later than some , and the fuel prices have caused me to reconsider traveling to a large degree . I've already cancalled most of what I wanted to do this Summer and Fall , and not just hunting related trips . The prices have already killed many of the Summer plans that my wife and Ihad .
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
It will effect everyone in some manner. It went up this morning to $2.59 here. Last weekend it was $2.38 here.[:@]
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I don't think it will impact my season much at all. Though it does impact my decision to buy a truck. [&:]:(

RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I live in Nevada and haven't drawn a deer tag for 3 yrs. Did draw cow elk though during 2 of those years, not this yr. I have to travel in every case since I live in the armpit of the state--Las Vegas. For elk its 4 hours one way which is not to bad. I put in for a deer tag in my old area when I lived in Reno this yr which was 2 1/2 hrs away then, piece of cake. Now its about 9 hours away and I am looking at spending $125 one way. Thats what it takes to fill my truck and I hold 58 gallons of gas. It sucks!! But if I want to hunt I have to pay the price and will do so. A bad day hunting is better than the best day doing anything else and I won't miss it.
On another note I really need to move......this place is killing me slowly but surely... |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Luckily most of my hunting places arent to far from here, so it wont effect me much. However, since i start college this year and i have to drive to campus every day, that may cut out some of my out of town trips. Ill definatly not be without hunting this year though, if i have to find a bike or something.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
me, my dad, and 2 uncles all have a 50 mile trip to the land and then a 50 mile trip back home again at the end of the weekend. gas is about 2.59 or 2.63 here is WI today. i dont think it will affect any of us.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I don't know what kind of bike you are talking about but I'll strap that bow case on the V-Twin in a heartbeat. 46 mpg.:)Can't beat those snake boots for riding anyway. lol
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Only the scouting trips. The OPEC (or however it is spelled) coalition could charge $120 a barrel and it wouldn't keep me one day from being in the woods...
...even if I had to ride my mountain bike with my treestand strapped to my back and the bow strapped to the handlebars! |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Well I only have about a 15 min. drive from school to where I hunt and can only hunt two nights a week, so I shouldn't have to change much. We might as well get used to it...it doesn't seem like gas prices are coming down anytime soon. The price of deer meat is on the rise.:(
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
YES, we used to run traps everyweekend and make one trip durring the week, now we MIGHT make a trip up on saturday. gas killin my JEEP. 18gal tank x 2.49a gal. = $45 and it takes a tank for a round trip.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Well iam planning on hunting less, i have too travel at least 40 miles just too hunt public land and my honey hole is about 1.5 hrs, Iam not sure if i even make it down there this year, Ya know what really gripes me about this gas price jumping so much, is that every other day they have another excuss why they had too raise it, its going too coast us all in everything we do or want, I think its about time these politicans did something, hell do they even pay for there gas,i think there shuttled around the country on are dime? I think its time we took a good look at are politicans and vote for someone thats like us below average income, the person that has walked the walk. Iam sorry to get so hot about this iam just sick of the whole gas thing..........
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
We'll probably just make plans to "truckpool" to the farm instead of everybody just heading down when they are ready. I guess we should have been doing this anyway.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Yes, it probably will.... I have been toying with the idea of taking a trip to KY or OH this season for a nice out-of-state hunting trip, but with the gas prices the way they are, I am reconsidering.
I even have to limit my scouting time too, which really bites the big one. [:'(] |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Not in the least...I hunt pretty much close to home, I'll hunt the exact same way I have in the past....I just hope this new Titan doesn't burn it like the former Dodge did...[&:]
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I just bought a 05' F-150 extended cab....27 gallon tank, and about 15-16mpg around locally.....around the same on the interstate....maybe 1 mile per gallon better.
The gas was around 2.35 a gallon last week...but like i said earlier it's up there. The gas won't effect my hunting too much, but does hender vacation type plans and activities. |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
All systems are go. I'm like the space shuttle, there ain't no stoppen me or delays at any cost . The solid rocket boosters have kicked in. I have trained for a long time and have stayed focusto go on this mission. The cheque off list has been gone over time after time. The launch date is sometime in sept and the launch pad is continually being fine tuned, at any cost of fuel. ;)

RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Its already affecting my scouting trips and most likely will stop me from making as many hunts in my favorite area. Guess I will be hunting the nearby state land more this season.
Leaving on my elk hunt in less than 2 weeks, but we are going ahead with it since 3 of us will be splitting the gas. |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
i`m lucky to only have to travel 6 miles one way to hunt my friends private property.
i will admit though if i had to travel much farther the price would be taken into concideration. PT |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Yep. I think for most of us it will. I will probably spend more time hunting around my house, rather than drive 50miles to my best spot. [:'(]This whole gas thing is a total scam.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I just got a new 20 acres to hunt, thank goodness it is within walking distance, and I have a good idea of where to go on it. I pretty much know where I am going to go, but the price of gas will have me reconsidering the longer trips. of course I commute 46 miles one way to work, 5 days a week. thank god for my honda hybrid
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
the explaination i heard on the radio yesterday says that basically no ones complaining . they said the economy is good right now and people are picking up the extra costs without a flinch. they also said that the rises in price are not even justafied. its just companies making money hand over fist. i could struggle and continue to hunt and drive to places like i have been but im gonna do anything i can not to buy gas.i had to buy tires this year and went with the smaller tires on my pickup as funny as it looks on my f-150. its killing me but i just dont jump in the pickup and make small errands anymore. i combine all my stops to one or 2 a week. another for instance theres a whitetail jamboree this weekend about 50 minutes from my home that i go to every year with guest speakers and some good deals to be had but im staying home. ive almost made it like a game in my head to figure out how to stay home and not spend on gas. i figure everytime i dont fire up the truck its money in my pocket;)
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
This thread is solid evidence that the price spike is at the hands of PETA[:@]. I knew them evil bastads had something to do with it! j/k[8D].
It's cutting down on my scouting trips also. I don't know of ANYONE who is not complaining. It suck and I don't like it!- but nobody cares about the little man. What really bite is we will see an increase in all goods we purchase do to the rise in shipping cost. Buy whatever it is you want now, it's only going to cost more tomorrow. |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Some of you guys mention how it will also effect the prices of other things. I'm and AC/Heat Tech, have radio/phone and Van, will travel. Yesterday the boss spent $90 to fill his truck/diesal, I spend about $120 a week, 2 tanks to keep the van running. We raised the price for a service call $10 yesterday. Last time we raised the price it was when gas first went to about $1.90 a gallon 2yrs ago. Yep, prices will go up while the oil companies make record profits. There isn't a shortage, we are just being gouged. I look for gas to stabilize around $3 a gallon for a while before it makes a push to $5 a gallon over the next 2 or 3 yrs.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
i useually leave my ATV in the woods at thelease once hunting starts, so deer season is not a problem, i will just take the car (35mpg). All i take backand forth is my gun, hunting pack, and a few changes of cloths. that will save my gas money right there. during scouting and hog hunting tho there is no way i bring the car. its the SUV or the Truck and both KILL gas.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
Not going to affect me. I'm not going to let those oil fat cats wreck my hunting plans. Might cost a little more, but I'll take that money out some other way, like food or baby diapers..haha.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
no it wont effect my hunting season at all although i have cut back on buying alot of extra things that i was planning on getting
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
it shouldn't affect my deer hunting since i hunt pretty much close to home when i'm in ky. i don't deer hunt in florida unless i go with someone else. it has though affected my turkey and hog hunting. even though the place i go is only about 15-20 miles from my house. but my old f150 doesn't get that great gas mileage in town but it doesn't do too bad on the highway. haveing to pay for gas has cut down on stuff i buy for hunting. gas prices have caused my mom and i to not go to ky as much so therefore i have to condense my scouting but i'll actually get to hunt more than i ever have up there this year. good lord i can't wait!!!!
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
im thinking about getting a horse and buggy. these prices suck a$$!
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
its easier for my dad and me to go hunting cause when we take our yearly trip we buddy up in a truck with our huntin buddy so gas money is split between 3 people so its more affordable.i have a jeep with some big tires on it that i drive and it doesnt get the best mpg ratio but i hunt close to home my hunting spot during the week is bout 5 miles away from the house, my weekend spot is bout 20 miles away so its minial, even if gas prices got to the point were i couldnt drive a car id ride a bicycle to my spot with my bow or rifle strapped to my back man thatd be a sight. but hunting is such a big part of me and my life that i wouldnt let gas prices affect my season theres always away to get around it. 1shot

RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
The price of gas could be $10.00 a gallon and I'll still be hunting. I own 80 acres in SW Iowa and 70 of it is prime deer habitat. All I have to do is get up, shower, dress, grab my bow and head out the front door. A quick 3 minute walk and I'm at my first treestand. Or a 15 minute walk and I'mup on the back 40. And I bought this farm 7 years ago for $52,000.00. My problem is my job is 62 milesaway from here. I carpool with my stepson and another guy and it still costs us $50.00 a week in gas.
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
just another thought. if i put an aggressive tred tire on a 35 mile to the gallon hyundia car with some air shocks and throw an alluminum hitch hauler on the back for carrying the deer i will be stylin:D
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
iam pretty lucky onespot is 10min. away or i can go in the back of my yard, or another spot is 15-20min. away
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
This gas price thing sucks[:'(] I think it is ridiculous and I look for the American people to put their foot down sooner or later. I think we should be getting our oil for free from these dang middle east countries that are in debt to us anyway. It will probably not affect my hunting trips any but will probably cut down on my scouting trips prior to the opener. It went up today here in MO to $2.49 a gallon. It might also be a blessing in disguise maybe all these dang naturalist will let up and we will explore opportunities for our own oil or even speed up the progress on alternative fuel sources. We don't need to be so reliant on other countries for fuel sources. Just my 2cents:)
|
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I hunt close to home anyway. I don't like to putmuch money into the corparate greed sess pool than I have to. I've been staying home much more and try not to drive unless I have to.
If everyone stuck together we could see fuel prices drop to a buck a gallon. Stop driving, walk, bicycle car pool, public transit. The oil fat cats would be begging us to buy oil! |
RE: price of gas- will it affect your season?
I just got back from vacation and we now pay over a dollar per LITER in Ontario, so thats a little less than 4 bucks a US gallon. My hunt camp is 3 hours away and I will go as often as I can. I will find somewhere else to save money.[:@]
