RE: best shot under your stand??
muzzy the only thing I will say in regards to this is I wouldn't take a head shot with a gun. If you have a deer right under your stand, odds are it will present you with a much better boiler room shot still within 20 yards tops. As others have said if you are off in the least bit you have a wounded deer that in time will die a slow death.

I dont like the idea of the head shot. I think this is a very bad decision. If you dont have a broadside shot or quartering away shot then dont take it. Wait till he passes your stand. Shoot for the vitals.

Well I dont agree on the head shot but I reckon some people do. My best shot under my stand was a 8pt buck 2 yrs ago. He had came in and started feeding, I watched for along time but he was just out of range and didnt want to take a shot. All of a sudden 2 does appeared and they came down the trail right under my stand. He kinda circled and picked up there trail and started to follow these doe. The doe were about 15 yards to my right and he was to my left. He had stopped to my left for a min and was quartering to me. He put his head down and started grunting and stopped right under my stand. (I mean I could have jumped on him). well when he was on his way I drew my bow, when he stopped under my stand I found my mark and just as I released he moved and I caught him in the spine. He feel right in his tracks but was trying to get up with just his front legs. He would have died but couldnt watch him die slowly. so I nocked another arrow and finished him off. I could of chose the head but never come to my mind. and it probally never will.

I remember quite a few years ago a guy we hunted showed us an article about a guy who shot what he thought was a 6 pointer with an odd point growing out of its head. When he found the deer the odd point was a piece of arrow. The broadhead stuck in the skull but did not penetrate. The shaft broke off but did not fall out. I have shot deer who were hit by cars (happens alot in front of our house) in the head with a rifle who do not always drop like bricks. Deer never cease to amaze me. They are TOUGH animals. I would pass on any head shots and wait for the better opportunity.
