Hi folks. Its been a long time since I've posted here. I've been a little too busy with work. I thought I'd check in to see what's happening here and tell my little elk hunting story.
I took my annual elk hunting trip to Oregon last week. It was the best trip out there I've had so far. We saw a total of 14 bulls and 20+ cows. It was really hot and dry. The elk were not rutting, were not bugling and generally disregarded any calls. I got one shot (not a good one as I had a limb in the way). Missed the limb but also missed the bull! Arrow went right over his back. I killed a very nice stump though. Anyone know how to score a stump? Dispite the miss it was great to get to see that many bulls in one week. Some were really nice. Some were just average. I had one really nice 4x4 stand 30 yards away and watch while I got my gear out of the truck. But by the time I got my bow in hand he was going mach 3. We watched 2 bulls stand 94 yards up the mountain from us. They made no attempt to come to our calls. They just stood there looking around until they finally got bored and walked off. Regardless, it was really exciting getting to see them. Maybe next year will be my year!
Anyone have any good tips on how to hunt elk when they aren't rutting, won't responded to calling and are scattered out (not in a herd)?

Mossy Horn, sounds like a great hunt regardless and for scoring stumps, I have a couple Pope and Young stumps so it really is decide by the type of stump. Each stump has it's own scoring minimum. Good luck next time.
