I am looking to get some custom carbon arrows made. I have the choice of 4" or 5" feathers or vanes. And I can get helical or straight. Anybody help me out to understand why all the options and there impact on my setup. I am thinking of feathers this time around.
I shoot the Mathews FX, 70lb, 30" draw. Thanks for the assistance.

If I were shooting fixed broadheads, I'd lean toward the helical 5". If not either the 4" or 5" would be fine. I would still stick with the helical though. See the 5" helical will stabilize your arrow the best given your choices. And with a fixed broadhead, I would want the most stable arrow I could get. If you are going to use mechanicals or just shoot field points I think either would work. I prefer helical feathers because they will spin the arrow more then a straight fletch. They will also provide more drag.

bobco,
Thanks for the feedback. I do shoot muzzy 100s so I will go with the 5" feathers helical. I also have the trap door fall away rest. I assume there will be no problem there.

I agree with BobCo, depends on your broadhead. I like feathers for their ability to quickly stabilize BUT they are noisy if you "ruffle their feathers". I use 4 inch vanes, slight helical, I use mech. broadheads. Anything that can go wrong...

I would go with the 4" helical feather, plenty stability with the helical, yet less drag than a 5" and a little flatter on the 30+ yard shots. also if you use the arrows to shoot casual 3-D it will make for a much better 3-D arrow. The Muzzy is a relatively small head with great flight characteristics.
Good luck

I have used 5" feathers or vanes on all my arrows for over 35 years. I just tried out the Quick Spin vanes and I think that they realy work. I always shot heavy bows with heavy shafts (2317-2419) and either the Zwickey delta's or 180 grain Snuffers and realy needed the stability of 5" fletching. Two years ago I switched to the 125 Grain Montec G5 and love them. I took some of my old Snuffers out and shot them from my Ovation (74Lbs, 2975 Goldtips) the arrows flew very good and grouped together, of course they were not where my 125 grain set up hits but the arrows flew great.
