This is my first year bow hunting. I'm getting pretty proficient at 25-30 yards with my bow. Only problem is deciding on broadheads. I bought a pack of rage 2 blade 2" mechanicals but was wondering the good and bad in the mechanical vs. fixed blade and any suggested broadheads to look at or if these will work/

The Rage design fixed the issues with angled or quartering shots...You will either find people that love them, or hate them. They fly identical to fieldpoints, but don't let that give you an excuse to shoot an out of tune bow. I would probably recommend trying the Rage 40KE which have a 1.5" diameter just because you will get better penetration and easier pass throughs, regardless of how much KE you actually have. If you search under the regular bowhunting forum you will find more than enough debate about mechs vs fixed...there are TONS of threads about them

I dont know how much poundage your shooting, but my son shooting 37# with a 75gr muzzy put a 4pt buck 130# field dress
in the freezer. He shot a little to the right at 18yrd this little
fixed blade head went through the shoulder plate and penetrated
both lungs but did not come out the other side I think highly of
muzzys now, at least the little 75gr head.

I went through the mechanical phase some years ago so I understand the lure of mechanicals.
Hind sight being 20/20... Why would you want to use a broadhead that holds its long, skinny, weak blades on with a little bitty screw or roll pin. I wish someone was around 10 years ago when I had the mechanical "bug" to set me straight.
Watch these videos and come to your own conclusions.

I dismissed mechanicals for a long time. Read up on them. Still dismiss some models. Read enough good about one in particular to try it. Sent a Grim Reaper RazorTip through a quartering to me doe. The shot was between 40 and 50 yards (i'm gonna rangfind it when i get back to camp. didn't do wit at the time, kinda tough when your at full draw). Arrow entered left side in front of shoulder and exited right side about third rib back. Doe went 25 yards and piled up. Stroy and pics are here http://huntingnet.com/forum/bowhunti...-9-19-doe.html I'm a firm believer in THIS mechanical head now. The bow helped also. I'm shooting an Athens Accomplice. Pulling 70# at 30" draw so i'm putting some serious KE out. Plenty to push any mechnical through a deers ribs.
The steel barrel tests are good for a wow factory. They do not show how a head will perform on game. They do test the durability of a head but not it's effectiveness.
I think the problem with the rage mechs is the tip design. Not good for penetration and definatly won't bust through bone, coupled with the weak aluminium bodies further compromised by the cuts through the middle to house the blades make for a fairly weak head. I just don't like their design and the countless videos of them not passing through deer......
I'm not discounting fixed heads at all. The best fixed head i've used the the G5 Striker. Fly very good and are tough as any head out there. Muzzy's are good heads if you can get them to fly well.
Just my miscellaneous thoughts.
Good luck with your decision and hunts this fall!!

Put a rage 2 through both shoulders of a doe yesterday. Seemed to penetrate decent I guess. Killed some dirt on the other side after it exited. That was from 49yds also... Granted she was a fawn
she only went 9yds
Id stick with a fixed blade if you dont wanna worry about the mech. head. If you dont have confidence in your setup, then something needs to change regardless of what head your shooting.
