RE: broadhead tuning?
by spin test do you mead put the broadhead tip on the glass, hold the arrow vertically to the glass and roll it between your fingers? cuz i think ive heard of that somewhere but just want to double check

I like to face off the front of the insert with a lathe to insure that broadhead draws up straight with the arrow shaft. But generally, I always was under the impression that broadhead "tuning" had more to do with getting the bow to shoot the broadheads and field points to the same spot (or very close).

ok thanks. thats what im trying to achive is my grouping to be about the same. i just wasnt sure if there was something about tuning broadheads that would make a huge difference. with the broadheads that i used last year the grouping was almost exact and i was using g-5 montecs. thank you very much.

Hey Bassman, I'm no expert but my take on it is (in a nut shell)the BH of your choice is going to fly differantly than the fieldpoints you are shooting/practicing with because of the differance in shape and design. FT being a pointed cylindershaped piece of metalthat is similar in size (dia.) as your arrow shaft, thus norecognizable resistance/defiation in flightcausedby cross wind or trajectory losswhenshooting a variety of distances. Everything is fine at this point because you have tuned your bow shooting the shaft of your choice witha certaintype and weight of field point. All you have to do is take a look at the BH you choose and you'll see (IMO) that there is definately going to be some arodynamic differances because of the BH blades. And, if you choose to use a differant weight for some particular reason (KE?) that also changes things. I think that is why some of the mechanical BH's arepopular with some folks becauseit's advertisedthat you can screw one on and it will shoot justlike your FP with out having to go through the whole tuningprocess again. Maybe we should be saying "re-tune your bow" instead of saying we have to tune the broadheads. Well friend, that's my nutshell for today. Good luck ????.

Spin test, broad head and vane alignment, rest contact , and a well tuned bow. Depending on your arrows and set up you might not ever get your BH and FT to hit the same spot. Your forward of center on the arrow changes by a bit once you screw on a longer tip into the end of the arrow which then causes a different flight pattern. If your BH shoot a consistent group then they are tuned the same you might just haveto make a slight adjust on your sight.

You should be able to get your broad heads to shoot very close to your field points, if you paper tune with your field tips and recheck with your broad heads. Broad heads will exaggerate the problems ofa poorly tuned bow. When that arrow kicks out (or up or down) the broad head blades start to catch air or plane the air and they have a different impact point than the field tips. You will also need to shoot the same weight points and have the correct arrow shaft spine and no fletching contact. Larger broad heads can be tougher to get to fly as good. I like to paper tune at about 6 feet out from the paper, further than that the fletching has too much time to correct the flight of the arrow. Good luck and be patient with it.

goto eastons website and download their tuning guide. read it. theres a secton for broadhead tuning. follow it. if you do everything correctly you should achieve your goal.
paper tuning is usually not enough. get ya close but not close enough most of the time.
its actually not hard IF your arrows are properly spined and matched...just making slight adjustments and doing some shooting...
good luck

we used little rubber flat o-rings 40 years ago until recently...
the best way is to take arrows to archery shop and have them true up your inserts...
then go home and put your points on without the o-ring...
then hold arrow on its point, spin it on flat surface, i use table at home..
spin it like top...
you should see no wobble in point..
if you do, heat you insert with candle with point in it, use pliers and move it around the shaft just a hair, spin it, reheat it and do it again..it WILL stop wobbling..
out of 6 arrows i had trued, only 1 i needed to heat and turn insert...
